Another [email protected]@dy wildfire close by. Highway closed, and it looked rough on the news, this morning. Clouds of smoke, and I'm coughing a good one, even with a mask on, inside and outside. No evacuations yet, but still partially packed from the last one, just incase.

Would be nice if professionals like therapists were more flexible, they never take any unforeseen circumstance into account for not being able to make an appointment. I can't predict 72 hours in advance how I am going to feel or if I am going to be sick.

I was doing a few months of therapy, but eh it's gotten too expensive to maintain, such is life, silly healthcare system does piss me off at times with how much they wont cover.

Checks/Cheques.

Or the difficulty in depositing a US one when in Canada. Not easy.

I haven't seen a cheque in about 14 years. No one uses them over here, not even sure if banks issue them anymore.

They are not super common here either for the most part at the consumer level, banks still sell them though, some landlords for rentals still only accept cheques, rent was the only thing really we needed cheques for, now with the new place they do electronic auto payment so no more cheques needed.

Governments will still issue cheques when they don't have direct deposit information available. This check is from the US IRS, so there was no account to deposit it into so they issued a paper cheque.

I've had to take in one of the sample cheques issued when I opened my account a few times to set up direct deposit and withdrawls. Stuff like car insurance, taxes, utilities. As for actually purchasing something with one, it's been a long time.

When I get a cheque now, I log into my bank account using the app and deposit it by taking a pic of the front then the back endorsed when prompted, write DEPOSITED across the front and put it in the cigar box. Smartphones are great.

This reminds me, I still have to cash in a cheque

In France they are still used, often as a guarantee or payment between private people.
For golf; if one wants to subscribe for a tournament; one always has to send a cheque for the subscription fee.
I think it's a criminal offence writing out a cheque which is not covered by funds in the account.

Luckily Tangerine has a void check option online, just print a "void" check with the necessary info, but if I want real cheques, its like $40 or something, kind of pricey, but since we no longer have to pay rent by cheque, we have no need to actually buy them anymore.

Probably around 1999-2000 last time I wrote a cheque to buy something.

That is what I would normally do with a Canadian check, app knows it's a foreign check so wont let me deposit it.. The app is too smart to trick...ha ha

To pay our monthly utilities bill we can pay online with $5 added for the privilege! Or we can go two blocks up the road to City Hall and pay in person by cash or check. This is the only check I use each month!

I do notice some government entities will charge a fee to pay online or by credit card, weird really as it should be less expensive for them to do it all electronically.

Eventually I will get this thing cashed, it's just tough since our banks don't have local branches, can't cross into the US (well I can but then have to quarantine for 2 weeks upon return to Canada) easily, and we are not support to travel outside of our region (not mandated but highly suggested not to) except for very essential reasons, but our car can make it to the closest ATM and back on one tank, and if I use drive through ATM, and only stop at rest area for bathroom breaks, could probably do the entire trip without ever coming into contact with another person.

Weather would have to cooperate as well, big mountains between us and the ATM which can get a lot of ice and snow this time of year.

Actually now I think about it the County does the same thing for our Property Taxes each year. When I was working it was easy because it was a short walk from my Lab to the Tax Office with my check. This year I will have to drive or mail it in.
