I also get annoyed when people just assume help is there, sure the help is there, but the big catch is, you gotta be able to afford it or have super good insurance, my last extended health plan covered a whopping $300 per year, most fall in the $300-$500 per year range in my experience, which covers very little in reality.
My health plan won't cover my therapy at all, due to a nice convenient loop hole over the terms therapist, psychotherapy and psychologist.
Ben's covers me for $500 per year (one session costs $160)
All 3 therapists I've seen in the last year say that i need to see a psychiatrist, i can't get a referral to one because I'm not currently suicidal.
Having money doesn't get you treatment either

I see the issues with "mental health" and it makes me weep..... I put the phrase in quotes, because the term itself is dubious, but better than "mental illness" which is just wrong. I studied Psychology and specialised in behaviourism. I walked away from it because I could see that the whole sector was dominated by medics.... and that's the what underlies all the problems now. A psychiartist is a medical doctor who studies psychology but applies it via a medical model..... i.e, use of drugs, the idea of "a cure" the whole idea of "illness".... a psychologist doesn't. But "mental health" comes under the medical model...

Psychoanalysis was cornered by those who sought to wrap up behavioural issues in Freudian or Jungian terms and charged their whack for it. The whole system has never really broken away from those constraints. Counselling is a learned skill and really comes down to listening, looking for patterns of thought and challenging them. Counsellors don't need to have a world of theory wrapped around them.... like first-aiders, they should be able to deal with low-level issues, but know when to pass more serious issues up the chain. So really, there's no reason why first-level intervention should cost any more than having your house painted or your car fixed on an hourly basis..... but where is it? Instead, I see people talking about costs of $100s per hour and help being unavailable to them. If we looked again at the requirements, we could make help more available...... but that challenges the established order of things, doesn't it?

Maybe it's time....

I can't deal with mouth sounds at all. It's disgusting and makes me want to bang my head against a wall, or drive ice picks into my ears when I hear it. And I live with 3 people who eat like their mouths have turned into a cement mixer. Blech.

At the risk of making generalizations, it seems to be less of an issue to Americans so they don't notice. It's a cultural difference, like the Chinese slurping soup or shoveling rice in with the bowl 2 inches from their face. I had to sort my son out on that, because eating at school played havoc with what I considered to be basic table manners.

Must make singing difficult. Or talking, come to that......

But I think you're in the wrong place to look for table manners....how can anyone remenber to keep their mouth closed when eating when they can't manage to coordinate the use of a knife and fork at the same time?

It bothers my daughter, without any influence from me. I guess it's a sensory thing, and I wish I could say the British are immune to it but both my dad and sister were making a hell of a symphony when I was last over. Oh well, I shall continue silently judging everyone, and also shitting myself that I'm making some horrible noise I'm not aware of at the same time

This is a can of worms that has been opened before on here, I may go and hide behind a safe ledge or something

I did used to get funny looks when I held on to my knife, but whatever, it's force of habit for me just as much as switching hands (harmless, though inefficient) it is for them. As long as people keep their mouths shut, they can use a bricklayer's trowel to eat with for all I care.

Gotta fend off any potential food-snatchers somehow.

I'm sure SoS has been treated to an Irish symphony at dinner before now....... with the speaker conducting an unseen orchestra with his knife whilst talking!!

I find a fork in the back of the hand the best solution.

I'm pretty sure I've conducted the orchestra once or twice myself

Don't we all..... but the only reason to put down the knife is to get more food (or wine)

One weird thing that happens with SWMBO is that she gets really upset if I reach for something with my left hand...... I wonder sometimes if it's a hangover from Moorish times!
