For a good many years I have volunteered as a part time helper on my local Transport Ambulance Service.
We take "clients" to & from there home to Hospital 's for Consultants or Interments + Physiotherapy
Sadly we do not have a "wheel chair ramp" so one particular "client" who goes' for Physio
Monday - Wednesday & Friday ,has to be lifted from his chair onto the gurney, he weighs +/- 82 kilos.
2 weeks back I felt a "twinge" as we where transferring him , & it turned out I now have a hernia.
As I checked with the coordinator before I signed on ,that I was covered by insurance & told that I was
I went in yesterday to put in a claim , only to be informed that Insurance Coverage only applies if the problem I now have, took place when I was Inside the Ambulance
WTF !

Asia Bibi has arrived in Canada hoping to start a new life after her years on death row. But although there is huge relief among campaigners for religious freedom that she is out of Pakistan, her ordeal may not be over.
Islamic extremists have pledged to pursue the Christian woman and kill her for the act of blasphemy of which she was accused and later acquitted. Bibi may spend the rest of her days looking over her shoulder in fear of an international assassin.

I know how expensive everything is in Canada compared to at least where I live in the US. Even though you're a couple bucks above the IL minimum wage, that's still a joke that people expect you to be able to live on that.
If you can find a way to get yourself back to the Milwaukee area like you've hinted at before, I think you'll do a lot better. Yeah, minimum wage is pure shite round here, but cost of living, especially with Wisconsin having no sales tax on food, is much more favorable.

It's the unknown costs regarding healthcare that really holds me back more then anything else.

If we could overcome the immigration part and afford healthcare we may, my wife has a chronic health issue so regular need of medications and doctor visits and those costs could eat away any potential savings elsewhere.

The company I worked for was US based so I was looking at their health plan for US employees.
Employee + spouse monthly cost is $485.37 per month
$1,200 deductible, $20-$200 co-pays.
ER Visit $200 + 20%
Hospitalization 20%
Max out of pocket per year $6,200
Prescriptions 20%-50% depending on type (generic vs preferred vs name brand.)
All of this and except in places where min wage is higher, the wage is only 9-11 per hour.
At 11/hr a full 40 hour week before taxes doesn't even cover the monthly premium. Pretty sad really.
Pretty substantial amount of income just for healthcare.
Employee + spouse & Kids $653.38 per month
Employee only $186

We have a cheaper HMO plan, but the coverage is shite and you have no freedom when it comes to shopping around for specialists.

That premium is actually not too bad, believe it or not. The deductible is pretty standard (though I have better copays $35.00 normal doc, $75 specialist/ER, and I do at least get $3.00 generics) but my premium is $180.00 per weekly paycheck, or around $780.00/month for me and my children. If I had to add my wife, that goes up to $300.00/week

The amount of income people lose just for healthcare is crazy and on top you still have to pay taxes.

I have mediocre coverage, but vaguely affordable copays, but a premium that jams me up the arse every week. Either way it's obscene.
