Eclipses may only last a couple of minutes but their relative scarcity, especially ones that go coast to coast across the entire US like this one will, makes them (to me, at least) interesting enough that I'm still mad at myself for not making arrangements to go to Carbondale to see it. It's only a 6 hour drive, I'm kicking myself. Though a partial is still pretty cool, so there's that. I suppose in today's internet age where I'd probably be able to live stream totality as I watch the partial eclipse in the car park at work, but I still want to see one in person, all being well in 2024.

Undoubtedly, comets like Hale Bopp (which was in late 1996/early 1997 ) exciting in their own way, because they are even more rare. Hale Bopp itself was that bit more exciting because it was not only visible to the naked eye, but almost as bright as the moon and large in the sky. It remains to this day my favourite astronomical event of my life so far, and even if I do manage to see an eclipse in person it will probably still be so. That includes getting to see Saturn through a telescope at a 'star party' the Lake County Astronomical Society had at my local library had last year.

Funny thing is, if the Moon's orbit around the Earth was not offset at an angle from the Earth's around the sun, we'd get an eclipse every month and we'd never be excited about it

If "our" moon wasn't so massively, disproportionately large compared to every other moon in the solar system, there would be no such thing as an eclipse visible from the surface of the earth anyway.

It isn't so much the relative size of the Moon compared to the Earth, rather the angular sizes of the Sun and Moon in the sky. Because the Sun is around 400 times larger than the Moon, and the Moon is about 400 times closer to us than the Sun, they have approximately the same angular diameter when observed.

How do we have eclipses if the earth is flat?

Like the moon landing, it's all secretly done in a studio in Hollywood.

It's also lucky that it happened during the day, and not at night.

I just bought a new LED torch that's specifically designed to work in the dark. I reckon they've improved eclipse technology to work in the dark, too.
