Sure, the statue of liberty I think was a gift from France, but the USA accepted it very heartily and adopted it as a symbol of what their country represents and now it is quite rightly theirs. Your entire post above reads like you're just having a good moan.
Its really your question. "Why is your liver being eaten by a hat on Mars", is a ridiculous question, but acceptable to ask someone who claims that their liver is being eaten by a hat on Mars. I did have a good moan, and I congratulate you on making the mundane argument that gets you back to two American statues, even though the Statue of Liberty can legitimately be said to be an American symbol, saying it is an American statue, still stands on sands more shifty than at the Ribble estuary.

Talking of statues, I was quite shocked, but strangely not surprised, when I found out the Martin Luther King Jr statue memorial in Washington was made of white granite. I was surprised that there didn't appear to be an outcry when it was revealed.

Today's heroes are tomorrow's villains.

The statue in Bristol has now been removed.

Aw - I was going to cycle down there today - take a look.

I've got a feeling it might get put back due to public pressure (although that might not be what the sculptor wants).

A shame that Bristol can't be as decisive and fast acting in other matters

We do. It has become quite a hit. It's called "Cloud Gate" but to Chicagoans it's known as "the bean".

Yeah, I'd go with bean. It's quite old/established though, isn't it?

It went up near the beginning of the 2000s I think.

Don't ask me why, I really don't know but I'm fascinated by Chicago architecture, the lake, the bean, all manner of stuff. Never been, unlikely to but I follow a fair few Chicago Instagram pages.

Actually, I would like to ask why !? My impression is that it's fairly bland (The Bean excepted). I follow an IG called Tall Buildings, and there is some truly wonderous architecture arising in China, Dubai, Qatar and other high growth places.

One thing Chicago has is a World class art museum, I knew they had a few things, but was actually shocked at what they did have, all those things I'd seen in books, and would have had "Chicago Art Institute" written underneath, if I'd looked.

I've only been to Chicago once, a 5 hour layover, years ago. Did I make the effort to go downtown to see the Seurat at the AIC, you bet I did ! Fabulous gallery. Definitely want to revisit.

I'm not really qualified to comment on architecture, but those who are do seem to like it.

Buildings of Chicago · Chicago Architecture Center - CAC

And then there's the whole Burnham plan thing, he of New York fame, responsible for the parks, boulevards and more.

Yes, there's more there than you might think for a sleepy old midwestern town.

Aqua looks semi-interesting.
