Shelley said it best about statues. Nothing lasts forever, and no matter how great a leader they were, time cuts them down.

"I met a traveller from an antique land,

Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;

And on the pedestal, these words appear:

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Myself and my wife were just disusing this poem and its relationship to today's issues, just yesterday.

Yes, indeed. Very sad. May this lovely lady rest in peace, and forever be remembered for her contribution to our nation.

edit: your link uses "First Indian War of Independence in 1857"
This story interested me because I grew up in this area of West London and know the area well.
I never knew of the connection between Henry Havelock and India, and I can see why the largely Indian Population might want to change it. Presuming they were aware of it?
The same Henry Havelock has a statue in Trafalgar Square which is getting a lot of attention.

Good call by the Governor General of Jamaica.

Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen has announced that he has suspended personal use of the insignia of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) containing the offending image.

TBH I always thought Satan or The Devil to be red all over hence my clubs nickname the Red Devils.

100% a good call.

We've a small township here named after Henry Havelock. Same for Picton. I think maybe these places will be renamed, possibly using the older Maori names Motuweka for Havelock and Waitohi for Picton.

Me too. I'm shocked surprised horrified he's portrayed as black. Considering how many recipients are not white skinned, I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up before.
