All six I have worked in (Elementary, Middle and High) have an entrance requirement for vaccines, hence my question.

[Edit] Mix of public and Private schools

Then I don't know at all. With a 50-60% uptake, there's clearly a lack of compliance somewhere. This article suggests that orthodox religious schools aren't enforcing, at the very least.

Do people use this 'there's always a risk' worry as an argument to refuse surgery or other medical treatments (Jehovah nutters aside) or is it just anti-vaxers?

He lost to Rollerball Rocco.

.
Of course everyone will weigh up the risks of their particular surgery or treatment, how much they need the surgery etc.
They have the legal right to decide for or against any medical intervention (if they are conscious).
I agree that all information about vaccination should be given to parents and the advantages promoted.
However--would you administer or inject a baby/child with a substance against the will of its parent?? If not, why ask a medic to do it.

Courts rule against parents whose views cause harm to their kids. Are you against quarantining someone carrying Ebola if it's against their wishes?

Faced with a parent who's refusing a vaccination because they're clearly too dim to understand what's going on, it's up to Public Health officials (& the medic at the front) to convince, cajole, & jolly-along the dummy to do the right thing & have their child vaccinated. Don't be so obtuse, Bipat.

Absolutely. Every time.

Why have you substituted the word "vaccine" with the word "substance"?

On the contrary---it is the "dim" as you describe them, who generally just accept what they are given.
It is those that search for information and read the figures for bad reactions and deaths and are often genuinely worried about what they should do.
If they do actually attend their GP they will be given the general advice and figures. However as there is no 'immediate' harm to the child it is their decision.
That is the legal situation in the UK.

Yeah, you could have been vaccinated and contracted autism ...

My daughter can't bring a PB&J into daycare for lunch, I'm ****ed if some crunchy mofo is going to send their kids in with preventable diseases.

Anti-vax parents (who I will bet at least a fiver on were all vaccinated themselves) should be charged with child abuse. Don't @ me.

Public Health officials do their best to deliver scientifically-sensible & rational vaccinations to the populace in everyone's interests. Parents who choose to believe anti-vaxxer rubbish which they take verbatim from the www are at best unwise, otherwise bovine. And obtuse lemmings don't help matters, either.

Because it applies to anything given to a child against the will of the parent. Including a particular medication that the parent may have a worry about!

(As said above if the life or health of the child is at serious risk an emergency court will sit.)
