Atlas Shrugged, more of a treatise on her Objectivist philosophy than the defence of free-market capitalism in The Fountainhead, seemed a bit juvenile - philosophy for people who don't think too carefully about philosophy. One of my colleagues is a bit Ayn Rand fan. He pitches himself as a free-thinking, libertarian conservative, and we have had some excellent discussions over the office kitchen table about libertarianism and objectivism.

I still suggest Ayn Rand is hugely overrrated as a thinker, though. For such "sophomoric" (one early reviewer's characterization) philosophy, she has had extraordinary and unwarranted influence in recent years at the libertarian (and conservative) end of the US political spectrum. A surprising number of recent US politicians and political appointees have been adherents: most famously, Alan Greenspan was part of Rand's social circle, but also both Ron and Rand Paul are adherents of objectivism (though contrary to popular myth, Rand's name is a shortening of Randal and has nothing to do with the author), Paul Ryan, and Justice Clarence Thomas are followers of her objectivist approach to libertarianism.

Iris Murdoch's is, for sure, at the other end of the political spectrum, having been for a short time in the late 30s a member of the Communist Party. "The Sea, The Sea" is just utterly brilliant writing, regardless of the reader's political persuasion.
I read those two book as well, at roughly the same vintage. As novels, incredibly badly written, particularly Atlas Shrugged. Definitely overated as a philosophical thinker.

It's the echo chamber effect. Populist leaders like Trump and Johnson only exacerbate it.

It is surprising that someone expects more than two on a binary scale.

All left wingers are busy smashing shop windows and executing Trump supporters, I suppose.

A bit like being pro life has become right wing.

Defending the family is synonymous with opposing gay and gender non conforming right to be seen on equal footing in society.

A Google search for "Defending the family" returns right wing religious pages at the top, strewn with bigoted dog whistles.
Yup, I see what you mean. Strictly siloed language conventions - like people deciding to abandon “gun control” and use “gun safety” instead.

I had to give my share of all that a miss today because I was watching the footie. Same tomorrow but watch out for Monday when I have to triple my quota to make up for it.

I acknowledge your moving goal posts (bit of a tell of yours)
Your fallacy is composition fallacy, though whether you are making it or thinking I am making it remains unclear. But neither all left wingers nor all right wingers display all of the traits that some of the groups individuals display. But I am going to stop here, I am not getting sucked in (more than I already have) to a never ending petty squabble like you often have with people most recently with Bristol.

Keep backpeddling.

This place has really gone far left. I hate to say it.

The intolerance here is like a stench.

Odd comment; can you explain? Are you trying to be offensive, just for the sake of it? Maybe I’m missing something.

The echo chamber effect is rather more common among leftists due to their inclination to censor, cancel and silence those with opposing opinions.

That represents a sudden change of narrative, does it not? Historically leftists and Islamists have been bedfellows. Whatever happened to the red green axis?

Someone was trying to be smart, but failed. You only need scratch the surface here to realize that many self-styled "liberals" here are just as bad as the far right they condemn every week. Same narrow minded opinions on the opposite side; they're hypocrites.

My comment was just the mirror of what those people really think of "right wingers."

And I've said here before the religious far right are no better than the Islamists we went to war against. Back when there were no screaming Karens around and the threads were a bit more balanced.

The far left can engage in cancelling (etc) because the left tend to dominate the media and education sectors. If the the right were in that position they would do exactly the same. Echo chambers are an unintended consequence of the internet and social media.
