Well if the Mexicans can pay for the wall, the tax cuts can pay for themselves.

There ain't gonna be no wall, and even if there was, the Mexicans wouldn't pay for it.

Trump backs down on border wall funding

It's campaign rhetoric, Dick. They'll say anything to win elections (and referendums).

My wife did some quick calculations on how we'll stand if the tax cuts go through. We'll be 4 grand a year better off. So I may have spoken in haste earlier.

Same here. Judging from the comments by the Treasury Secretary the lower and middle income earners definitely come out ahead. Lowering the corporate tax rate a no-brainer to benefit economy. And realizing wealthiest will scheme to take advantage of the 15% rate using pass-through entities, the fellow specifically mentioned they will put into place restrictions, and that the plan is to replace the AMT but restrict deductions that made it necessary in the first place. All that sounds good !

Except will the obstructionist Congress dilute the plan, throw in special interest loopholes, and both parties just do their usual pain in the neck delays ?

I do think reducing the top rate for those earning say over $200,000 is absurd
considering the total debt of the government- if necessary should have been phased in over a number of years. Someone making $1 million a year wont lose incentive if they pay an extra $50,000 for a few years. I would have raised taxes on the very wealthy for 4 year period until definite results lowering of total debt and increase in after tax wages of lower income workers were seen.

Then there is the regressive social security tax that wasn't addressed for the impact on lower wage earners.

I guess it can be debated the overall impact of reducing personal tax rates on the economy, but helping out those on lower or middle class incomes I cant see as a bad thing.

Well those that are concerned are certainly welcome to pay more taxes than they need too. I assume most roads and fire prevention a state concern anyway.

I guess the theory is though the tax cuts will make the economy grow so such concerns will be addressed. And that at some point here will be some massive infrastructure programs that Trump alluded during the campaign. Whether theory correct or not, lowering taxes on lower income earners is certainly long overdue.

The plan is entirely silent on how it will be paid for. Either services (apart from the military, of course) will be decimated or the deficit will balloon. Or both. Really, this is just an attempted repeat of trickle down economics, which is what set us on the path to ever higher income and wealth being controlled by an ever smaller percentage of the population.

To me, this all sounds like an attempt by Trump to look as those he's actually done something in his first hundred days.

Flynn looks like he is in deep legal trouble. I wonder if he will spill the beans on others in exchange for a plea bargain?

It's time though that the middle class got a break.

When Prop 13 passed in the mid 70s cities were warning that many services would be cut, dire consequences ete etc . It hasn't really happened though.
They've learned to manage with less by identifying and cutting out the wastage

Keep drinking the kool aid. The young and new immigrants are paying inflated property tax bills so the old folkies can live on the cheap.

I agree services have not really been cut, people just have more debt.

In POTUS speak this was going to be the world's best ever cover up.

this article from 2015 reads as if it could have been written yesterday.

Prop 13 is essentially a wealth transfer to older and longer established property owners from younger generations. I think that's poor public policy. And if state and property taxes cease to be deductible, you know rents are going to go up to recompense landlords for their increased expenses.

I think both have happened. Clearly the provision of education in California has been a major negative consequence of prop 13.

By drastically increasing the cost of healthcare for many of said middle class, especially those that are older and less healthy?
