A little rundown of the lies this week:
"According to falsehoods being told on his behalf and embraced by him, the U.S. election was manipulated by scheming from a dead Venezuelan strongman, by a computer system capable of flipping Trump votes to Joe Biden ones across the country, and by something weird happening in Germany. If that’s not enough, the communists are coming."

That's despite having seen him in action for 4 years, and all the efforts of the 'never Trumpers', 'Lincoln Project', 'Republicans for Biden', Cindy McCain, and an unprecedented number of prominent republicans denouncing him (Colin Powell, Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, etc etc). And it's undeniable that most conventional media was against him.

Not only that, the dem's lost ground in the senate and house.

So while it's undeniably satisfying to ridicule Trump supporters, if the country is to have any hope of getting past this, we need to figure out what it is about the Dem message that is not getting through. What is so unappealing about the dems that these republicans would vote for this Orange Turd?

I started watching Fox News coverage of the election on Nov 3 as a foil to CNN (and because Fox called AZ for Biden before other networks!), and since then, I've been watching their show with perverse fascination. I've started reading the comments page on their website and for giggles, I've been 'shit posting' on their comments pages for over a week now. I've read literally thousands of comments posted there, which are overwhelmingly pro-Trump. The common themes are the usual suspects - taxes, welfare, law-and-order ('defund the police'), and an overwhelming dislike of what they refer to as 'socialism'. They tend to use 'left', 'socialism', 'communism' interchangeably. We need to stop treating this as an intellectual exercise in semantics, worrying about whether they know what 'socialism' is ... the fact that Joe Biden is 'right of center' from any meaningful perspective is totally besides the point with these people. The 'right' has managed to establish the narrative that 'the left' are 'socialist' and that has been weaponized to an incredibly strong degree.

I think there's some merit to looking at Trump supporters as cult members, then figuring out how to deprogram them.

Democrats are socialists who want to take guns away, basically seems to sum up one segment of Trumpsters.

Another segment is the racists who want a white utopia.

I imagine there are other segments within his base, but those are the ones I keep seeing on FB and reddit.

Trump was smart in some ways, he rounded and riled up people who probably wouldn't even vote most of the time.

It's not a vote for Trump. 80% of the US, maybe more, votes the same way every time.

Did anyone think that would change?

People were hopeful that some of those voters would understand that just for once, maybe, just maybe it would make more sense to vote a different way. One should always have hope, there's no point otherwise.

In Maine, there was a massive difference between the vote for President and the vote for Senator.

President, Biden(D) won 53% to 44% for Trump.
Senator, Collins (R) won 51% to 42% for Gideon (D).

Now, I know that plenty of democrats have habitually voted for Susan Collins, but surely that result is a massive repudiation of Trump.

This is true. However, Biden "only" got 4% more votes than Trump, meaning that a switch by only 2% - one person in fifty - is enough to change the result. With the results being determined on a state-by-state basis, the margin may even be smaller (and in any case, you don't even have to have the most votes to win, as Trump showed in 2016). And 30% of the electorate didn't vote at all!

The point is, it doesn't have to, at least not substantially.

I know, my point was it's close to 70m voting for the R on the ticket not a 70m member Trump cult.

In Maine? I doubt it.

I think if Covid wasn't an issue he would have won again.

Sure.

One thing I find intriguing is that in the last four presidential elections, the Republican candidates have all been rebels. McCain, Romney, Trump, Trump. None of them party faithful, my party right or wrong types.

Not sure what you mean, you doubt what? That Dems vote for Susan Collins? That the vote was a repudiation of Trump?

I am surprised, or disappointed, that despite an actual threat to democracy itself that so many have just done what they do. It has confirmed my fears of human nature, rather than strengthen my hopes for it.
