That bad is it ?

I'm glad I don't share your view of human nature, seems there is little hope left for the future of the planet.

It's not hard and fast statistics or anything, I just really don't like people all that much.

Given that there's no reason for any of this to be here at all, one would posit that infinitesimal hope is still an acceptable number.

That conservatism and religion are still two major driving forces in the world in 2015 though, seems to make me lean towards the 'we're still all ****ed' end of the scale though. Thankfully I'll be dead in the next 40-50 years so it won't be my problem anymore.

Although I haven't got quite as long to go as you, I find myself saying that more and more frequently these days.

I find it very comforting.

Hopefully you'll have a long and happy life, and the last thing you see is the look of concern on my face.

Right?

It's not like I want to go off myself or anything, but I do get an overwhelming warm sense of 'it won't be my problem anymore'.

I seem to be seeing some very selfish, self centred attitudes on here.

None of you got your kids futures to worry about or is that why your lives seem to revolve around TIO ?

Don't be silly, obviously people care about their kids futures but there's a limit to what you can actually do about it. There's no point in making decisions based on what may or may not happen at some indeterminate time in the future. My take on life is that it's for the living. If I can make the future easier for my kids I will but not to the detriment of our lives now.

Fair comment.
Well if you lot can cheer up and convince me there's still some hope, I might even hang back a while before I spend the last of the kids inheritance.

It's not even about kids, TBH, it's about idealism (at least for me that's how it is). I like Christopher Hitchens' quote about the party still going on, but you have to leave (mortality). I would lie to be around when as a species we have moved beyond primitive superstition (religion)...but I suppose it won't happen in my lifetime. That's one of the chief things that annoys me with Islam, that the strain is so potent, that it turns the clock back. It's as much a fiction as Christianity or even Scientology, and yet it is taking root in Western societies where it should, by logic, be rejected.

Spot on.
It's not just religion in itself, it's the abhorrent practices that accompany it.

Very interesting Trump article in the New York Times Editorial raising interesting parallels with the rise of populist parties in Europe.

Can This Really Be Donald Trump’s Republican Party?

https://t.co/KBibv7Jro2

President Trump getting more likely by the day.

With you on that.

What I see (from the outside) as the preoccupation with fundamentalist Christianity in America worries me too - that fact that people with so much power could hold such delusions.

Up until a few tears ago I had rather admired America, it's peoples and values, but no more. America seems to be divorcing itself from the rest of the world and reality.

A well thought out, considered post on a Donald Trump thread?

Go and face the corner.

Like em or hate em, it's just as well they're around at the moment to provide something of a Global balance of power.

Present day Europe with it's mostly pathetic weak willed lib minded socialist leaders would be a walk in the park for Putin or any other major power anytime they felt like walking in.

Yes, very worrying indeed. The fact that a factor, possibly a major factor in the decision process of GWB (and his lapdog) in going to war in Iraq was scripture is of grave concern.

And then there's Ben Carson who seems an intelligent and viable candidate, until you realise that much of his thinking is warped by his strong Christian belief.
