If this is "old news" then I apologise , but I personally have never seen or read this comment in print before I opened this link .

It is something that likely happened when Dowd was still his lawyer and has now come out in a newly released book. You would know these things (ie, Dowd no longer his lawyer --- it was published in Woodward's book, etc) if you would dig a little deeper.

I understand that Dowd was Trump's lead lawyer when Woodward wrote his book which would explain why current tense is used, and I understand that he resigned as lead lawyer but I can't actually find any articles which are useful in determining whether or not he is still retained by Trump. Is there an article that points us definitively in one direction or the the other?

Are you sure about that? Dowd resigned in March. Woodward's book was launched this week. Based on the transcripts from the Woodward/Trump phone conversation, Woodward was still trying to get a Trump interview for the book as late as May. That tells me the book was still being written at least a couple of months after Dowd resigned.
