Even if he wanted to, he can't do it without the support of the Senate, can he? But I guess many American voters won't understand that...

But if he has no intention whatsoever of doing it, why doesn't he just say so? American voters would understand that he has answered it - even if many didn't believe him. But it is a puzzle that he refuses to say so, and in the absence of an answer American voters of all persuasions are right not to trust him. Or maybe if he said he would if he could get enough senate support for it, then that would be the most transparent and honest answer to give?

I bet there's a lot of hand wringing going on over the topic behind the scenes

We may as well ask each candidate "when did you stop beating your wife?" Whatever the candidate snswers, it's unlikely to end the question.

I'd say the question "Do you intend to beat your wife?" is a more fitting analogy.

It's a pretty pointless question, the party in power is going to want their guys on the court so it really is not going to make a huge difference.

If ABC ends up appointed in time, Biden wins and adds an additional member it will still be heavily conservative...

ACB

That just isn't true though. Adding a justice more in line with RBG, assuming ACB is confirmed, would return the court to where it was before she died - with the Chief Justice as the swing vote that would make votes 5-5 and keep the lower ruling in place.

Long term that might be the more palatable option, with those of us in the center and worried about precedent, anyway.

Haha that's a decent typo.

My maths was incorrect but the point stands surely it's in the best interests of every party to have it balanced.

So the furore about packing the court is surely just the republicans latest hoax?

I don't know that I would call it a hoax - the left is screaming that if another seat is stolen (their words, not mine) that Biden should look to pack the court.

The left however seems extremely short sighted.

This one covers it. https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/...-supreme-court

"The talking point for Republicans comes after a pair of progressive lawmakers were explicit in their calls to increase the number of justices"

It's a long shot and would also require the democrats to change the senate rules to remove the need for a 60 vote majority ('the filibuster'). Numerous democrats are against that rule change. I posted an in-depth article somewhere about the issues associated with removing the filibuster.

Thanks - I'll have a read. Brief look suggests that it doesn't match civils claim, but I've only scanned the article so far.

The left are the only ones wanting the court packed. It's not a claim. You won't hear moderates saying that.

So a hoax to assign it to democrats and Biden then as it seems they have no intention of packing the court?

Theres no way that Biden supports it, but he can't say so right now - he needs the left to turn out for him on election day.

It doesn't make sense. If Biden is smashing the polls, how come barely anyone is attending his rallies? ....And if Trump has slumped in the polls, how come his rallies are very well attended?
