So is the UK. There are many illegals in the UK as we speak and if France and the rest of the EU would just drive the immigrants to the coast and sell them boats to cross over the channel it would be very interesting to see how the UK stops mass illegal immigration. Bombs, machine guns, air raids, poison gas?

Consider that in the 1920s and earlier, almost the entire population of the Indian subcontinent (much bigger than modern India) was entitled to travel to, live and work in the UK. Yet very few were successful in attempts to do so and no bombs, machine guns, air raids, or poison gas were used to stop them. Only the few privileged and wealthy ones, such as Mohandas Gandhi, were successful.

Post independence there was free movement--the main problem was that there was a strict limit on the amount of money that could be taken out of India. Even in the 60s people came by ship.
(In the last few days an agreement between the two countries on the return of illegal immigrants and the sharing of information on criminals.--)

They came by ship, I don't know numbers, I only know 'people'.
Those who came later many were persuaded into the NHS! The numbers you describe were obviously greater.
Those from the West Indies also came by ship.

I was speaking of the middle classes who financed themselves, as mentioned in the above posts. Both before and after independence.
