Angry Penn State Uni Paedophile Scandal

I don't know if the news reports are being reported throughout the US, but here in the North East a huge scandal has hit the headlines regarding one of the football coaches at Penn State University whom has been serially sexually assaulting (including raping at least one young boy aged 10) over a 15 year period and how it has been allegedly covered up by the University authorities.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/...ek-reports-say

Apparently as many as 17 victims are coming forward:

What is really shocking to me is that the paedo - Jerry Sandusky - is currently out on $100,000 bail (and answered his front door to reporters wearing a Penn State jacket). Btw this sick *#@+ has adopted six children (and fostered others) and set up a charity in 1977 "The Second Mile" - a group foster home for underprivileged young boys from dysfunctional or absent families....no doubt grooming them for his own sick purposes.

I'm also astonished and disgusted that the then 28 year old assistant coach who witnessed the anal rape of the 10 year old didn't a) remove the child from Sandusky or/and punch Sandusky out b) Call 911 c) phoned his dad for advice?! and still he and his dad didn't report it to the police. :curse: He clearly was more concerned about his own career prospects rather than helping a defenceless child and since then has been moving up the ranks at Penn State as a coach

It stinks.

Shocking. Ignoring it, is making himself an accomplice.

I'm still agog at the idea that because someone was a great coach that we can't punish them for their part.

I don't think Joe Paterno is coming out of this well. While I'm sure his statement was sincere, he shouldn't hang around waiting for the end of the season.

Not being in the know, regarding football, college or otherwise; is this story bigger than just a betrayal of trust from a college to children? Is this also a bit of a celebrity story? Are these coaches well known by your average college football fan?

I think it looks really bad for the college. As far as I have read Joepa should have told the guy to go straight to the police and not the college people, this is the mistake he made, but he is not the one who witnessed it, or the abuser.

Joe Paterno is the figure head of Penn State football, he has been there forever. Widely renowned as a pretty good coach. He was also all controlling. From what it sounds like, he knew what was going on but did nothing.

It all sounds very similar to the Catholic church scandals. All powerful bishops knowing what's going on but shuffling things about, hushing things up and trying to ignore the bigger picture and avoid any scandal.

I haven't read that he was in the know anywhere? From what I read the attacks took place after Sandusky had left pennstate.

Like I already said he got the grad student to report it to the college authorities, but what he should have done was take the guy straight to the police to report it. There is no evidence he knew about the abuse before that.

Depends on the school...if it were some back water nothing school, it probably wouldn't be as big of a story as it is... Penn State is pretty massive...possibly some more juicy would be if it were a UConn basketball coach doing the fiddling, kind of thing.

What's disturbing about this whole thing, not just that others in the staff and the uni knew, but also other colleges knew about it but also kept quiet.

Yes - these guys are "celebrities" - in many ways this is disturbingly similar to what happened in the Catholic church with everyone closing ranks and covering things up to protect the "institution" and I think that the comparison is quite apt because college football pretty much is a religion in the US.
