Default North Korea

Gets an occasional mention in the Trump thread but probably deserves one of its own.

Anyone got a view on how it is actually going to pan out?

North Korea Hits New Level of Brinkmanship in Reacting to Trump

“Trump shot himself in the foot with his unabashedly undiplomatic United Nations General Assembly speech,” said Lee Sung-yoon, a Korea expert at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. “By threatening to totally destroy North Korea, he created the impression around the world that it is actually the United States — instead of North Korea — that’s motivated by aggression. In effect, Trump gave Kim Jong-un a freebie for another major provocation. Kim will oblige, and claim that it was in ‘self-defense’ against Trump’s unnerving threats.”

Calling Trump a dotard is below the belt. Kim is young, Trump is old. Getting old is a fact of life. (Unless you die young in a nuclear attack or similar.)

Perhaps we should just keep talking to them as I don't think 24 years is long enough. How long have we been talking about giving the 6 counties back to Ireland and hows that working out?

The end of the world as we know it caused by two powerful leaders who got caught up in a verbal pissing contest

A new definition of global diplomacy .

Could it be that having travelled the world kim has realised that by developing his growing atomic arsenal he can gain a place and influence at the top table.
He will be the leader that ended the isolation of N Korea that in years to come it will become an dynamic low cost economy like it's neighbours.
For Trump and others it is not just the military threat that concerns them but the threat to their economies and manufacturing in years to come from another Asian Tiger.
China went from an autocratic, isolated nuclear power into one of the world's top three economies in a relatively short time.
Does Kim wants to take N Korea down the same path?
He knows that a military confrontation even using conventional weapons can only end with the destruction of his ruling class and military.

I hope people won't mind my saying, but as someone actually living in the Pacific Ocean area I really wish they both would wind their necks in instead of the posturing and shaking of dangerous sticks. Lets start with the idiot in the USA who could be guided but prefers to willy waggle.
Utter fool.

Well, can we compromise on ".... would be a serious environmental disaster for the Pacific region, and would ultimately lead to many deaths. Not to mention the risk of world war being increased."

Navy Seals or a Reaper strike on Kim.
Take out the head, deliver copious amounts of food aid to the starving population, reintegrate with the prosperous South.
Be like German reunification all over again.
