I've heard it all now - Certification for being a painter and decorator is Mandatory in Quebec and voluntary in other Provinces.
What a joke.. only in Canada! Painter and Decorator Careers in Construction.
If I had a head for heights and I was younger I might consider crane operator - I know someone who has worked in this trade for many years - he travels all over Canada working ( a lot of the time in remote locations ) during the summer and fall, then travels worldwide during the winter! He makes good money.. he started in his 40's and at 69 is still working at it. He says he likes it as once he's in his 'box' the only communication he has to have with other people is via a radio for directions - mainly he works alone. You can get on the job training and then apply for certification, apparently.. now can I turn the clock back?

I suppose I'm on my third career. Left high school with a couple of dodgy graded A levels, and did a 2 yr legal secretarial course at college, but ended up working for a construction company for 5 years. All my friends, bar one, went to university, but I had neither the funds nor the aptitude or interest to go.
At 25, I joined the police which I did for 16 years and had a blast. It was fun, but I do not miss it.
At 43, I had moved to Canada and went back into administrative work in an HR department, and have moved my way up through a few roles. I'm now a pension and benefits specialist through in-house training, exposure, learning and courses. I have a new benefits certification and will have a retirement cert by next year. Who knew? That was pretty random to me.
I have been turned down for one opportunity at work because I did not have a degree. I felt slighted because I was told to my face they knew I could do the job. And even if I did have a degree, it would have been a 25 year old degree in music or drama anyway! Not even vaguely relevant.
Having said that, if I had pursued such a degree, I would now of course be a Tony-award-winning musical theater star with no requirement to pursue pension certifications in HR!
In my final move, I am going to be a dog groomer.

I have to accept that I am not employable in the current situation, I dont even have a positive work reference or personal reference that isn't family so that doesn't help me. Boils down to as long as I have untreated mental health medical problem, I will likely never have a real job, and never keep a job long term, takes very little right now to send me into a spiral and into a bad place which then results in job loss. Mental health wise I am in no place to work, so likely will not work again in my lifetime as its not possible at this point in time to get long term treatment without self paying which requires more money then i even could provide when working.
About 3 years for certification from what this page says for BC
