That's good to hear. But the problem in these situations are almost always not the majority of people but usually the minority that buy all these gossip magazines which feed money to the gutter press who are responsible for hounding these public figures. We all notice these trashy rags at the check-out isle at our local grocery store. They should be banned.

I agree with much of what you said but let's not forget that "real" sentiment and opinion can be manufactured by printing half-trues and falsehoods especially if put in the public eye on a regular basis. All one need do is to repeat the falsehood over and over just like Donald Trump does and you can cause a large percentage of the public to believe something that other people are also hearing and reading. In psychology it's called conditioning! Repeat it enough and they will believe it! And human beings in every country are often not only naïve but easily manipulated if you appeal to their lowest common denominators. That is the reason why among Republicans in America they believe the UK ambassador is a sleaze bag, when in reality he did nothing wrong but still lost his job and reputation.

Those are not considered a media outlet in the United States. You and I can go on a twitter account and make a comment but that doesn't qualify either of us as journalist. But after the 2016 presidential elections when Russians attacked our elections, even platforms like Twitter and Facebook are required to police their online pages in ways they were not previously. The Mirror, The Sun, BBC are media outlets and they would be held to a standard that if they don't meet they can be forced to pay crippling damages. And keep in mind there are not only federal laws to police the actions of the media but also state laws which can control how near you can stand to a public figure's home and other limitations.

Somewhere I read Prince Philip said to Harry " You have fun with actresses you don't marry them."She married into a royal family with its own rules and customs, I would have assumed she accepted this and knowing her every action would be scrutinized fairly or unfairly, and would reflect on her husband and her child.

Banning publications, even sleazy ones, is the thin end of the wedge. Not a good idea at all. Most people don't read, still less believe supermarket checkout mags. People do laugh at their "stories" though.

And the Ambassador's reputation is just fine. It's Trump that's been hurt by this airing of what the British government and diplomatic service really think of him.

I remember one from 2014 or earlier - queen's death imminent. Exclusive of course.

Lion I would like to believe your comments, but the facts are the UK Ambassador is heading back to the UK with his tail between his legs and even the new soon to be Prime Minister Boris Johnson refused to verbally support the Ambassador during his debate against Hunt when he had the chance to send a message that no one steps on the UK including Donald Trump. Instead Johnson caved and behaved like Trump's defender.

I do agree with you that banning those trashy publications is a slippery sloop and the action might be going too far. I would happily agree to have them placed away from obvious access in grocery stores and put in brown paper bags away from the eyes of young impressionable children. The same way porn is sold.

Who, other than you (with all due respect) is saying that he has his tail between his legs? Other than the shameful Boris, diplomats and politicians alike have voiced their support and respect for him.
And Johnson has been loudly and repeatedly and heavily criticized for his (lack of) action. As for the resignation, this may be a difference between the US and UK cultures - in the UK such a resignation is considered an act of honour and dignity, not of defeat. He knew there was no way he would be able to do this job in the US again.

It's really more like the way the media treated Sarah Ferguson, coincidentally the wife of the second son. Diana was only hounded once the marriage broke down and became "fair game" as she was never going to be queen.

Is this thread about Markle or yet another Trump or Johnson or Brexit thread?

Yep, as mentioned trash journalism attracts the gullible. It's not just print media, much of it's online now and I don't think the US is any better than the UK in this regard. The influence this has over the uncritical reader/viewer is undeniable, but you can't fix stupid.

It probably is a cultural thing. Taking a butt whipping at the hands of someone else is considered honorable in the UK, while in the States being beaten by somebody is written down as a lost and not the act of coming in second in a two man race. But certain cultures play to compete while others play to win the game, and in Trump's world he plays to rig the game and people that don't fight back will become his victim. He doesn't play the game with honor in mind, and if honor is the focus of those who oppose him, they will have a story to tell of how they lost to him while being honorable. Hopefully the Democrats are paying attention!

One thing I know for sure is Meghan definitely loves Harry. Moving to a new culture is never a easy thing when you are doing well at home. And to be the target of attacks in the UK when she could be living her successful Hollywood life makes it all too clear that she is deeply in love with the Prince.
