Margaret Thatcher.....later to become Baronness (Lady) Thatcher...the daughter of a greengrocer from Grantham, Lincolnshire....1925 / 2013.....Great Britain's first female Prime Minister, best known perhaps for making sure that the Falkland Islands remained as a British Crown dependency following the brief war in 1982.....and as a result led to a very nasty and spiteful Labour party minister to utter those nasty words "Margaret Thatcher is glorifying in slaughter!" How vile can you get in such circumstances?

She led the Conservative party to a resoundingly clear majority victory in the 1983 General Election.

Then she had to contend with the destructive and politically motivated ultra left wing Trades Union movement, and especially the National Union of Mineworkers, led by their leader highly gobby bile spouting Arthur Scargill* for one whole year from early 1984 to 1985 - and again she defeated that particular enemy in the fight for democracy within the industial sector of a country which is undeniably NOT a naturally socialist paradise.

Napolean called us a nation of shopkeepers, which is precisely what Lady Thatcher's dad was.

Come the next General Election, that of 1987, she again led the Conservatives to a resounding victory. That surely speaks volumes of her actions during those two siginificant events in Britain's recent history.

She had her faults, of course, and often seemed to many to be rather stubborn, not taking advice all that readily...her way was the highway, sort of thing, but evenm so she will undoubtedly go down as one of the most prominent of British Prime Ministers of all time, often described as the best MAN in her Government Cabinet, but to those who knew her personally knew full well that she was blessed with full feminine qualities, and was much kinder and more aware of people's personal problems than her enemies would ever be prepared to admit.

At her own request she will not receive a State funeral, but she will be granted a Ceremonial Funeral at St Paul's Cathedral, attended by the Queen and other members of the Royal Family, along with political figures of all colours not only from here in the UK but also from right across the world.

She was a bit like marmite in the eyes of many - you either liked or, or you despised here - no half measures on that one.

As someone who was not around to see her (I'm 28, so wasn't old enough to be aware) I don't look at her as a bad PM - it seems that most of the changes she affected needed to happen. I do understand though that the perspective of an observer and a participant are very different.

Those of us who have almost, but not completely, morphed into "Mirkins," will be reminded of who we are and what we always will be, by the death of our beloved Iron Lady.

She led Britain away from the brink of economic and moral extinction and even forced Labour away from that brink. She made us proud to be British during those terrible weeks of the Falklands War.

She was the clearest-thinking exponent of Conservative economic principles and - along with Pope John-Paul and President Reagan - was largely responsible for freeing Eastern Europe from the chains of Communism.

Would that we had a leader like her today. She will be missed.

You may as well shut up today, because the haters are going to shout loudest. It has been a long time coming.

LOL: I'll shout louder than ever - the haters just spew vitriol because they are ignorant and misinformed or just plain evil like Galloway.
