Default Major General Nick Welch

Major General Nick Welch ... bit of a mouthful, how about Major Nick. Seems like his wife's preference for country life had landed him in the clink.

Wow. I feel sorry for him. This seems like an unbelievably severe sentence for what seems to me like a somewhat technical fiddle. He’s got to go to prison? Lose his rank? Wouldn’t repaying the money have been sufficient?

Not sure if you are being facetious, but it does seem a very hard sentence. Certainly a financial penalty is in order, as is repaying the amount he over-claimed, but given that he's served in some overseas wars, a prison sentence seems quite harsh. And it does sound as if his wife is the one at fault here.

Me, facetious? Seriously, I’m not, on this occasion. I really feel the court is trashing & dismantling his life, when, as you say, a financial penalty would be appropriate. They were in London, or Dorset? Really, it all sounds a bit of a technicality.

Harsh but fair. He was in a position of real responsibility as one of the most senior soldiers in the Army, no doubt disciplining soldiers junior to him. He deserves to be held to a higher standard - he knowingly committed fraud. Repaying it would be 'getting away with it' with just a slap on the wrist.

Defrauding the army of 48 grand is pretty serious.
