Where? Not in the UK, because applicants are not allowed to work and people can just "vanish".... unless they're locked up

But did they have right of abode?

Many Ugandan Asians were "citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies" which did not give them the automatic right to live in the UK.

If they came before independence of Uganda they had the right to live in the UK.

Uganda was already independent by the time of the Idi Amin crisis - and AFAIK you are incorrect, the second- class citizenship applied to all those born outside the UK (even Ireland, pre- Independence) l know this because my father (born 1921) was offered this before opting for an Irish passport.

The Idi Amin crisis was in 1972. The parents of Priti Patel; came in 1960s---presumably in 1962 when it was necessary to choose whether to take British or Indian passports if they wanted to leave.
