I said "for many". Little old ladies usually buy guns because what they see on the TV scares them

I have a mathematical/ actuarial background and whilst I accept the illogicality of this sort of discussion it still frustrates me.

I was talking to a guy yesterday who wanted to visit the UK but would not fly over water because of the 'risk'.

But seemed quite happy to drive. And probably text etc.

As a certified aviation buff who reads every crash/incident report because he loves aircraft - I wholeheartdly agree with this statement!

From one of those links above

quote
•Since 1979, gun violence has ended the lives of 107,603 children and teens in America.
unquote

Don't know if that stat holds water or not, but if its true, over 33 years, roughly 3300 deaths a year.

Been in Iraq/Afghanistan roughly 10 years. Roughly 8000 casualties. 800 a year.

800 soldiers a year in a war zone.
3300 kids a year in a civilized country.

Hmmmmm..............

Yes, I get that.

But my objections to loadable weaponry in the house is not because of its relative risk, but because of its absolute risk.

And (having a philosophy background) I have a secondary objection to the way that violence and aggression have infiltrated so many aspects of the US, from the games and toys it makes for its children, to the entertainment it provides to its adults, to the shoot first, ask questions later attitude of some law enforcement, and more.

Violent culture mixed with poverty, drug gang activity, and city ghettos.

Oh, and opportunity. You can get those suckers so easily, legally or not.

It's interesting that the "Children's Defense Fund" uses imagery of young kids, but is careful to repeatedly use the data for "children and teens" in their reports...

Looking at the CDC reports from 2006 until 2009, the number of children < 15 who are victims of firearms homicide is low, and has been steadily falling (2006, 285; 2007, 264; 2008, 252; 2009, 234). Of course, the numbers in the 15 - 25 cohort are much higher. The worst toll is among older teen drug dealers and gangbangers. That so many kids get into that world of evil is a huge problem. If your kid is not in a gang, is not doing/dealing drugs, the chances of him/her being a victim of gun violence is extremely low.

Phew - we're only killing a 1/3 of a war zone worth of real people then - the rest are worthless pieces of crap that don't count, so shouldn't be counted.

What a relief!

(I couldn't find anything on the CDC website that broke it down between nice kids and rascals, so have to take your word for it .... probably correct, but to imply that it came from the CDC is , hmmmmmmmm)

Well, that is its a relief unless you look at the real figures from gun deaths as reported by the CDC Take 2009 - deaths by firearms (not just homicide) ages 0-15 was 546 - so if your homicide figure is accurate, that implies over 300 kids 15 and under were killed by firearms for reasons other than homicide.

And if you include all teens, its back up to 2,811, of which 1855 were homicide, so around a 1000 non-homicide - a war-zone and a bit.

Exactly. Those darn statistics getting in the way of an emotional arguement.

"The leading causes of injury-related death among children ages 14 and under are motor vehicle crashes, suffocation, drowning and fires and/or burns."

"The leading cause of nonfatal injury for children ages 14 and under is unintentional falls."

Not the NRA: http://www.safekids.org/our-work/res...ct-safety.html
