It was a little tongue in cheek, but actually I wouldn't put it past him. He would probably hope to trigger another riot or two. He seems to like those.

Does the court have to appoint a public defender? Of course they could represent themselves. Any lawyers want to add their 2 cents worth?
I doubt they will plead guilty at least at their initial court appearances, few people do, they may plead guilty at some point in the future under a plea bargain though.

Suppose it will all boil down to what the DA and defense think their shot is with a jury. I guess the defendant could ask for a bench trial, might be hard to find an impartial jury in this case.

If they can afford a lawyer there will always be one willing to accept a high profile case, if they cannot afford one the state will have to provide one.

Trump can't pardon state level crimes, only federal crimes. Trump can't do squat if these ex-cops are convicted.

Regarding the protests here in Australia following George Floyd's murder.

Jacinta Price is absolutely spot on with her comments.

I make no comments for or against Ms Price's views, I just want, as a matter of balance for people unfamiliar with Australia, to point out that Ms Price's views are not widely representative of those of Indigenous Australian people. Then people can make their own minds up about the video, which is as it should be ps this article isn't about the protests in Australia, it's about Ms Price herself.

I agree that Ms Price's views are not widely representative of those of Aboriginal Australian people, but that doesn't mean what she said is untrue or wrong. Anyone cross referencing what she said with the facts, would be hard pushed to find falsehoods. What made you think it is about Ms Price herself?

Good heavens, Paulry posts a video of someone making "good points" or is "spot on" and it transpires that the speaker has some questionable opinions (at best). What a surprise.

I only heard opinion, not facts, and it was remarkably like an opinion well countered earlier on BE.

She "saw a post on facebook"...well, that's proof enough then.

Make of this what you will I am only quoting from a CNN online article

When Floyd's death took place, it was Kueng's third shift as a police officer, said Thomas Plunkett, his attorney. Chauvin, he added, was Kueng's training officer.
Plunkett said Kueng turned to Chauvin at one point and said, "You can't do this."

Can start to see where the defense is going with this.

Gray, noting that Chauvin was a training officer, asked the judge: “What is my client supposed to do other than follow what the training officer said?”

“Is CPR probable cause for aiding and abetting a felony?” Gray asked.

Don't know if the cop can afford the lawyer and is paying the bill or if the lawyer took up the case, but appears Earl Gray is a well known attorney in the Minneapolis area and was the defense attorney for Jeronimo Yanez in 2017 who had been charged with manslaughter and reckless discharge of a firearm and got an acquittal in that case.

I'm afraid any fruitful discussion between us on this matter is impossible Paul, I find many of Ms Price's views repugnant. Not going to argue about it or go down any long roads though, I'm very comfortable with my opinion of Ms Price and I imagine that you're very comfortable with yours.
ps I meant the story I posted was about Ms Price herself, I thought I should mention that as people may have expected it to be Ms Price talking about Mr Floyd's death.

Arrest death video by the NYT.

The prolonged use of knee on neck is certainly hideous and stomach turning.

Well, the police finally did something about looting.

Vallejo police kill unarmed 22-year-old, who was on his knees with his hands up
Police in northern California fatally shot an unarmed 22-year-old who was on his knees with his hands up outside a Walgreens store while responding to a call of alleged looting, officials said.
