I got about 80k a year in flight perks from 1998 to 2003, now I would have preferred cash, but the flight perks costs the airline nearly nothing so I can see why they went that route...

They kindly reminded us on every paycheck the value of all the flights we had taken up to that point, some didn't do much, but I maxed out the flying well to the max.

Back then IRS didn't consider it taxable benefit, I believe they do now, so they may not be as valuable a benefit as they once were.

Is that 400k gross or net?

Wealthy can find ways to make their actual income really low, just look at Vancouver the those no income homeowners who own homes worth millions, of course they have money, they just don't earn it in the sense where its considered income, so their income is low but their wealth isn't.

It'd be pre-tax. But stuff like that heavily varies regionally. Six figures is a king's ransom in the rural midwest but nigh on starvation wages in parts of California.

400k still gives you a good life in California.

At $20/hr if I could save 100% of what I earned, I could hit 400k saved in about 10 years, however its impossible to save 100% of your income so not really an achieve goal. I use $20/hr as it was the the highest I ever made per hour even if it was only for a few weeks.

Well I guess longer than 10 years to get to 400k after tax, as $20/hr is 34k ish after taxes and crap.

If I added up 20 or so years of income, I think I may have made more than 400,000 over 20 years, not really very much if you truly think about it.

Actually probably closer to 500,000 over 22 years.

As I told someone on reddit once who was complaining about paying taxes and only having apparently 120,000 left, I will trade spots with them and pay their higher taxes and they can have my income and pay less taxes, those types never take me up on my offer.

I would feel privileged to attend such an event if I was given a ticket. But there'd have been people claiming she'd 'snubbed' the event had she not attended.

Never mind that the Met Gala is just another disgusting circlejerk for the capitalist elite, essentially all we've got here is a platitude on a dress. It's not woke at all. It's performative at best.

Looks like an expensive dress too.

It would mean more if 1) she donated most of her salary to charity and lived off the median individual income of US which is around $42,000/yr and 2) wore a crappy Wal-Mart dress to the event.

She makes about 4.14 times the median individual does in the US, and like most people who make good money, they do quickly lose touch with reality of life for the typical person.

Like him or hate him Henry Ford was smart in his pricing of the Model T

$290 in 1924 is about $5,000 today, imagine being able to buy a brand new car for only $5,000 our nearly 10 year old Mazda 2 can still sell in Canada for 4k-5k on a car lot.

If your income in 2021 didn't increase by 6% you have lost buying power since 2020.

That is just to keep up with the "official" inflation rate but anyone paying rent, gas, food all know prices overall tend to outpace the governments official inflation rate.

I heard the dress was $30,000.00, which is just bloody stupid under any circumstance.

My income increased by 8% this year but only because of dumb luck when I was offered the promotion, otherwise I'd have been lucky to have got 3% (had I not been laid off which seems like it was likely given the lack of urgency in refilling my old position).

Fun times.

In a good year, I might have gotten 3% which at my wage was like only 40-50 cents an hour more, and honestly, the net really didn't change much, the $20 more per week just gets eaten by slightly higher tax deductions and in the case of my last job our extended health went up as did our parking costs, so I may have actually ended up with a pay cut that year once the increase in extended health and parking was accounted for.

Some airport employers are generous and will cover the cost of parking, but these days most wont but thankfully its cheaper than the public lot, but $80/month was still 4 to 6 hours of labor depending on what hourly rate one was at, of course management got free parking, and not only that they got free parking close to the terminal and didn't have to make like 15 minute walk.

Then next group of people with prime parking was the airport authority employees, then CBSA and US Customs officers (they used only like 25% of their entire lot were our lot was overfilled and good luck finding parking most of the day) then our lot way at the end, from my car to time clock was 15 minute walk.

Wait, you had to pay for parking too? That's crap.

For me, I didn't get a raise for a few years, and due to insurance premiums going up every year my pay would go down by a couple of bucks after open enrollment. This country was a mistake.

How has she lost touch with reality? She wore a borrowed dress to an event she got into for free, and got her politics all over the news. She has to maintain two residences in the most expensive parts of the country just to do her job, so living on the median wage is even less possible than it is for others. What's with this dumb idea that people campaigning to improve the lives of others have to live in the same conditions as them?
What does Ford have to do with the price of milk?

Yep, a lot of people do, pretty much everyone who works at a hospital has to as well, most hospitals don't have free parking.

I feel the same with Canada, sure we don't have the premiums, but we pay so much more for our everyday basic needs and higher taxes, have a weaker currency with even less buying power and wages in Canada so stagnant, it really insane how little wages have grown when accounted for inflation, and everything is based on 2 incomes, like wtf not everyone is married for one or has a partner to financially split things with.

There is a problem in society when a fixer upper is 1 million and median household income is 86,000 and median income for 1 earner is barely 40,000

Add in the massive debt Canadians hold because of 20 years of low interest rates, and now Bank Of Canada is scared to raise rates to deal with out of control inflation.

At least I don't have cancer but statistically, I probably will at some point in my life.
