Serious question btw. I'm curious how that happened.

I don't know if this is accurate, but apparently we may have Ptolemy to blame.

No idea. I don't like calling it the English Channel BTW, but that's what it seems to be called. In speech normally refer to this country as Britain or the UK, and only say England if I want to make a comment specific to that nation.

Yes, It seems to be a very old name.

Looking it up I came across this headline ...
(Article does not seem to exist anymore though)

English Channel is renamed 'Le Pond' as EU officials draw up ...

To remind the English that they are responsible for westbound sea traffic! Air traffic however transits the La Manche sector!

Hard to believe. Really hard to believe. This quote sums it up:

Gabriel Attal, added to criticism of Johnson’s letter on French television, calling it “mediocre in terms of the content, and wholly inappropriate as regards the form”.

Yes, but aren't you in favour of the smugglers having and voicing their "opinions" which leads their poor victims to their deaths?

Sky news just said the letter appeared on Twitter before Macron received it ...

In the mean time, in France the voices to scrap the Touquet agreement are getting louder and stronger so refugees would be allowed to go to the UK to apply for asylum there.
Seems reasonable to me.
Taking back control and all that

So basically the same as Belarus and the Northern African's countries.

If you're asking me should the smugglers be silenced in some way, have their freedom to propogate their lies curtailed by the state, then no I am not for that freedom to be taken away. The mechanism for doing that would have detrimental effect elsewhere in society. However, the smugglers could be held accountable for their actions, inciting dangerous behavior or misrepresenting safety. Facilitating illegal immigration. A court would then have to look at the facts of the individual case. Controlling speech is never the answer.

I have never fully understood France's willingnesss toward that agreement. And it did seem to me during the Brexit debate that it is something they would no longer want to continue.
