Dogpiling

Answering honestly, do you think dogpiling exists on British Expats

Call me old-fashioned, but having to go to Wikipedia to read a poorly written article to define some word I’ve never heard of, makes me a bit resistant as to whether it happens on BE or not.

My guess is that it doesn’t, since most posters are long term members, many of whom know each other, and are relatively tolerant of political differences and such. Because of good moderation, new members who sign up won’t survive long if they indulge in the kind of behavior described in the Wikipedia article. There may be a few resident trolls, but even they have human characteristics and redeeming features.

I'd never heard of it either.

I like to think that if someone makes a comment along the lines of the US government blew up the twin towers; Bill Gates is trying to inject us all with a tracker device; Trump is as honest as the day is long and the election was stolen; Covid is a hoax and the government just wants to control us....stuff like that then, yes, I would expect any reasonable person to respond indignantly and given that nobody is appointed on anyone's behalf to do so the natural result is that many different people will ridicule that comment and maybe the owner of it too.

If the view expressed is more mainstream - then it will attract the ire of those who disagree and support of those who agree. And a debate ensues. The quality of the debate may vary but it won't be dogpiling.

No, I don't think it really happens here. There are a few people with "minority views" who therefore attract a lot of disagreement. Lately, it has become a trend to claim that such people are "not allowed to express their views', which is plainly self-contradictory since the only reason they do attract the disagreement and criticism is precisely because they have expressed their views.

We have had a couple of posters in TIO complain on the threads that "they aren't allowed to express their views" or that "alternate views aren't allowed", but frankly that's a bit silly given that they have expressed their views all over the place, repeatedly. Not all views are equally good, facts and matters of opinion are not the same thing (even 'alternative facts'), and while everyone should be free to speak everyone is also free to respond, criticise and disagree. That includes being less than polite, and the complainers on TIO at least are as impolite as the rest of us. Life is not a cocktail party, where everyone just nods politely and moves on, whatever anyone says.

We used to call it 'ganging up'.

As Bristol has said - if someone makes a controversial post expect many to comment on it - negatively if it's obvious nonsense.

Smacks to me of claiming victim status - acting like a twat and wondering why everybody hates on you.

Applicable to so much of life

I suspect someone has engaged in a bit of moaning to the authorities.

I had to look it up as well.
Of course it happens, it's just human nature, and it happens here if you let it.
It's disingenuous to believe otherwise.

I thought it was what happens when you have 5 months of winter and snow in your back yard and you let your dog out to do it's business.

I suppose it rather depends on which definition you use.

directing critical or abusive comments at another person or group.
For me, the key word is at.
In my time on TIO there's never been much targeting of an individual or group other than for the material (and source of it) they've been posting. Disagreement between two parties isn't, by itself, dogpiling.

Urban dictionary defines it as "A disagreement on an Internet message board wherein one person says something wrong or offensive, and a large number of people comment in response to tell the person how wrong and/or horrible they are, and continue to disparage the original commenter beyond any reasonable time limit" and I'd say that doesn't happen on TIO.
