The poverty you find in Canada or Britain or the US is a peculiar breed of poverty and one that is quite often self-imposed. The impoverished are not starving to death nor malnourished beyond personal dietary choices. Food is incredibly cheap, there are food pantries and free soup kitchens everywhere. Progressives may shout that we gotta do something, but what exactly can we really do? The poverty one sees in developed countries is only a poverty when measured against the standard of living enjoyed by the common masses. And it's a poverty that is very closely aligned with substantial mental health problems and substance abuse problems, which compounds the situation. It's why even in progressive leaning nations like Canada they still struggle to 'eradicate' poverty.
Personally, I find it an embarrassment that wealthy countries such as the UK have not solved this. To write it off as self-imposed is grossly simplistic.

I too have been to places where people actually die from malnutrition. This in no way puts what happens in the UK in a better light. Both should be solved.

But it is a major issue in BC and simplistic version of what happens.

I would be very surprised if the homeless in Canada are properly nourished, sure some make the choice to be homeless but others are simply so mentally ill they can't care for themselves, let alone eat properly and stay properly nourished. It's a failure of society really. Native Reserves can also be lacking proper foods and the cost of healthy foods is very expensive especially in the northern regions of Canada.
Maybe open a new thread to discuss homeless/poverty in Canada.

To 'lump together' countries, as in the post you replied to is also 'grossly simplistic'. Many were previously wealthy pushed into gross poverty by the western guns and Empire ambitions to get wealth for themselves.
Many such countries now are the economies of the future and already helping poorer countries.
They will be the future non-EU, free trade partners of the UK---(which posters here describe as globalism in a negative sense.)
There is also much poverty in Eastern European countries and as you said also the UK.

Yes more! (Or is TIO just for those at home in white-Western countries?)
I was replying to a post which 'lumped' together Africa, Asia and India regarding poverty when obviously there are vast differences between them and the reasons for poverty.

Poverty is poverty regardless of the country lived in and the UK has plenty of it.

I just think we all know there's only one country you're interested in talking about.

I speak about the countries I know well as does every one else, (for myself ---UK, several EU countries and India.)

(I was replying to another poster)!

(As I asked, --are only western countries allowed to be individually 'mentioned' on TIO?)

In the UK children going to school hungry is a disgrace, at least more have warm clothes nowadays due to cheap imported items.
The question is also why is there an increase in obesity with its added health risks.

Free school meals: Nearly two million children did not get enough food during 2020, report says (inews.co.uk)

The point about what is happening in the UK isn't really that it's worse elsewhere. The point is why are we ok with it being as bad as it is in the UK, a country that objectively speaking as a whole has every possible advantage. For centuries states, and people, have attempted to avoid addressing or accepting responsibility for this state of affairs by writing it off as individual choices, as though in the great race of life the starting line were in the same place for all of us, relieving us of any moral obligation thereafter.

It isn't as though I didn't know before - but recently, in my current job for a UK charity, I have been given many, many insights and personal stories into the lives of parts of the British population and it's shameful that things are the way they are.

Disadvantages compound over time, leading to shockingly poor quality of life in a rich, modern country.

Apparently as long as another country is worse than the one your living in, your supposed to just be happy with what you have because someone else is worse off.
