Default Defund The Police

I have seen this sign at numerous rallies both in the US and Canada and there have been articles written about it as in this example

https://www.macleans.ca/society/life...e-only-option/

What does this actually mean? If I take it these 3 words literally does it mean cut off all funding for the Police via budgets in municipalities, towns, cities, States, Provinces and at the Federal level.
Think about it if there is no Police budgets then I suspect that thousands of Police officers won't get paid and if not getting paid will seek employment elsewhere. Now I know some will agree with this but again would you feel comfortable in having no Police officers on duty 24/7/365.

Now one Ottawa Councillor stated "Obviously context is important in this discussion," he said. "I don't mean zeroing out a budget. What I do mean is there are a number of expensive services currently provided by police where outcomes could improve and which could be better handled by other professionals."

OK fair enough let us look at what we spend on them and what services they provide and could funds be diverted to other areas.

The article I read was about reducing some funding - or scale back the increases - and put the money into other things that would go a long way towards reducing the need for ever increasing police expenditure.

It's a familiar argument - like funding prescriptions so people actually get treated and avoid becoming more of a financial cost to health services later; fund care home places to reduce the number of 'bed-blockers' in hospitals that cost more than a care home place as well as preventing treatments for others who can't have a procedure done because there's no hospital bed, which means they can't work which damages the economy and so on; fund addiction treatments and recovery plans so people don't go through expensive treatments only to end up at the mercy of dealers because they're not housed and supported properly; fund housing properly so enormous sums are not spent on resulting problems, not to mention the human cost etc etc

We don't need police, borders or a military. The world is a cuddly place.

If you say so.

I don't think anyone else was suggesting this, so you're out in front there.

It has been suggested in numerous threads over the time I have been on BE. Now granted some were said in jest but some were deadly serious.

I've never read a post on BE that suggested we don't need police either. Disclaimer, I haven't read every single thread on BE It'd be a pretty crazy thing to suggest though.

No-one's ever posted it. The idea of re-allocating some police funding to combat the root causes of crime is a good one, though hardly original, but not practical in some places. RCMP detachments in rural areas are under-staffed and response times are too low now, so cutting that budget won't work.

Well we have had crazy suggestions on here before.

But yeah, it's more about what kind of police with what kind of organization, accountability and powers. And it is about "why don't we put more money into preventing the problems that lead to police actions and imprisonments being necessary in the first place rather than pouring vast sums of money into the police and locking people up." I really don't see why it isn't a good idea to consider these options. Other countries, notably Sweden I think, have done exactly that. The US imprisons a phenomenally large % of its population per capita.

It would seem likely that if this takes off at all it will happen in areas where there are problems relating to how policing is carried out. And even that will be gradual. I don't see any sort of global movement to abolish police forces.

Only because they're criminals though - said in the voice of Constable Savage.

Well there are lots of unemployed people at the moment with some in lockdown or cannot go out due to self isolation so it could be done and for the record I won't be volunteering.

Re-opening will probably result in a spate of traffic accidents and violations (I've seen bad things as traffic increases here), and a bunch of fights as people get used to interacting with each other again... Some of the domestic abuse that's been increasing under lockdown will be reported later and result in a pile of investigations. The border is quiet because you're on the job; you stay where you're needed most.

Just watched Wolf Blitzer on CNN taking to a Minneapolis City Councillor and Andrea Jenkins who is an American policy aide, politician, writer, performance artist, poet, and transgender activist. They were talking about defunding, disbanding, reforming or whatever adjective you care to use. He asked them so Who do you send if a person is shooting people on the streets? Reluctantly and with looks that could kill Jenkins replied I suppose we would have to send in the Minneapolis Police Department.
As they say in the MasterCard adverts Priceless.

A long time ago I told one of my sisters "I saw a bumper sticker saying 'If you don't like police, next time try calling a hippie'" and she said "That's what I've always done..." That was about 10 years before we got a SWAT team. We took a lot of heat off vice and drug squads by legalising prostitution and pot (Yay Canada!). Where do you trim the budget? In a meaningful way.
