More economic fallout, Disney is going to lay off 28,000 workers in the US mostly in Florida and California theme parks. Pre-pandemic Disney employed 110,000 people between their Florida and California Parks, attendance at Disneyworld is weaker than Disney anticipated, and the California parks remain closed.

67% of the lay offs will come from hourly part-time workers, with the remaining being salaried workers and management.

California parks will see more layoffs due to being closed still.

Well I got word my sisters family in Phoenix has COVID, well some of them.

It's a bit interesting the family of 4.

My sister no symptoms, tested negative, the county tested her for antibodies and that test shows antibodies for COVID

16 year old tested positive, only symptom a mild cough

11 year old tested negative/no symptoms

My sisters husband however is quite ill, he isn't in the hospital yet however, but sounds like he may be getting close to the point where he will be if doesn't show improvement in the next couple of days.

Her husband is the only one with underlying health conditions, diabetes type 2 and overweight.

County health people told my sister they believe she was an asymptomatic carrier.

Very sorry for your family at what must be a very trying time. I do hope no one else comes down with it and your brother in law makes a quick and full recovery. πŸŒ·πŸŒΌπŸ’πŸŒΊπŸŒ»

Thanks for sharing - we have precious little experience of 'real people' getting it so this is informative. Here's hoping they have a speedy recovery.

Is your sister also overweight/diabetic? This seems to be a huge contributing factor in terms of who 'suffers'. I presume the conclusion that sis was an asymptomatic carrier is formed because she has antibodies, suggesting a prior infection, but the negative test suggests 'not any more'. And the fact husband is sick now suggests she had it quite recently. Do they both work? I presume sis is busy looking after kids since they aren't in school.

What's interesting about Phoenix right now is - we are just now coming to the end of our 'bad weather' period, where everyone stays indoors (daily temps over 100F / 38C). As September becomes October, our weather becomes nice, and everyone can start going outdoors, getting natural exercise, opening windows, etc. Conversely, much of the rest of the country will soon enter the dreaded 'indoor' period, where the virus has more opportunity to spread. So I'm hopeful that AZ will have some decent 'results' in the next few months.

My part of the world

Out of interest, how many days had you scheduled for that? And was the Portuguese side all on the coast or coming up through Ponte de Lima?

They are all in the same house.

My sister said there was some contact tracing most likely source was the youngest kids football team.

I just looked up the details of where I was supposed to be right now - 'rota vicentina' - southwest Portugal.

My sister is a little overweight but not obese and doesn't have diabetes, nor do the kids.

Yes, the public health people are assuming she was asymptomatic and had it since she tested negative but has antibodies. The anti-body science isn't perfect, but its the theory based on what is known.

They were both working, well were working until the husband became ill, so now they are off work, but yes previously working.
