I can't help but think that restricting commercial flights only makes much sense when the countries at the ends of the route have significantly different rates of infection, and that as most of the industrialized world appears to have around 500 cases, +/- 200, per million of population, that restricting people from moving between one country and another isn't going to make a whole lot of difference from here on.

I wonder how much this is for political reasons. BBC now discussing if Hotels have to be closed, and Hairdressers, unclear.

That might be a little harsh - this has all escalated incredibly quickly.

They could have been aboard since a time when it wasn't such an obvious peril.

Hasn't it always been an obvious peril? If it's not a virus it's food poisoning or something else. Cruise ships are just breeding grounds for illnesses.

QANTAS is suspending all international flights end of March until at least May 31 and parking 150 aircraft.

China appears to restricted all international flights to Shanghai only.

US Embassy sent an email out this morning via their registration service for USC overseas, they are closing all US Consulate's and the US Embassy in Canada for all non-essential services, only emergency services to US Citizens will be available effective end of day today.

I am worried about food a bit, we live in a condo building so there is no safe way to leave, the common areas are heavily traveled, as is the elevators and then going into a crowded grocery store that is packed, seems hard to avoid and social distance in such situations. Online isn't an option as they require a credit card, and the local store to us that does delivery is so busy they have no available time slots and their website keeps crashing.

Condo/Apartment living might be the worst type of housing when in a pandemic.

Density might be good to conserve and and transit services, but its not good in a pandemic.

I don't think we can make it through this financially, our rent is too high, and being unemployed not like we can just move, we also have no resources to pay the cost of moving, we may have to learn not to eat....ha ha

We had to borrow during 2019 to keep housing, and now this, and now all the loans are coming due, so yeah not looking good for us, and there is like 0% chance of getting a job in this environment.

If the virus doesn't get to me, the stress will take me out.

Touché, and wholehearted agreement.

Not to mention the absolute certainty, if I were ever unfortunate enough to be dragooned onto one, of being stuck with the ship's bore 24/7

But I think this particular one has loomed rather suddenly and caught a heck of a lot of people on the hop. Hindsight and all that, but I wouldn't have thought there were all that many travel warnings about over it when most of those people went up The Gangplank of No Return.

Once again we're into semantics aren't we.
IF the intention is to prevent social contact where people gather, then every bookmakers', ladies hairdresser, beauty parlour, nail bar, barbers, tattoo den, bookshop & charity shop must be included..... If it's only where food is served then maybe not, just the pubs, restaurants, leisure places, etc.
This was the death sentence of a lot of small businesses in the UK imo.

Apparently they’ve run out of critical care capacity in certain hospitals in North London.
Used to be my local hospital for many years. It was where I was ask to walk the whole length of A&E to look at my x-ray so they could tell me I had broken my leg. Being taken somewhere else is like winning the lottery.

Yep, this is getting dire.
However, a friend and I went for lunch today and the first four restaurants in rural Suffolk were already closed.... at the fifth we got ultra-fresh milky, flaky Cod in Adnam's Beer batter, double-cooked chips and mashed peas with mint, washed down with a drop of Aspall's Suffolk cyder that had travelled all of 12 miles from where it was made.
