China & Canada

For those who may not know Canada has been caught in the middle of a battle between China and the US over Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou who has been under house arrest in Vancouver after she was arrested in December 2018 at the Vancouver Airport on arrival at the request of the US.
She has been fighting extradition to the US ever since. Note she is under house arrest in a multi million dollar mansion in one of Vancouver's most expensive neighborhoods.
Not long after her arrest China arrested 2 Canadian's in China in retaliation, they have been in prison since, China has scheduled their trials now, one is scheduled for March 19th, and the other on March 22nd.
Canadian officials are currently barred from attending the trial, as is the media and public.

There was some hope after Biden took office the DOJ would drop the charges and Canada could secure the release of the 2 Canadian's in China, but so far the US doesn't seem keen on it.

Canada should have politely sent her on her way and told the US to bugger off.

But certainly for Canada there was no good option.

China : Massive population and manufacturing capacity which supplies numerous countries with everyday goods.
Canada : Massive country with small population and manufacturing capacity.
As soon as she landed on Canadian soil be it in transit or not we had been requested by the US to extradite her. We were caught in the middle so we followed the rule of law. This made the US happy at the time and pissed off China. Of course the Chinese will never admit that they arrested the 2 x Michaels in retaliation.
The average Canadian has expressed outrage but are in no strong position to do anything about it. You cannot take it out on the average Chinese citizen as they had no part in it. Sure I can elect not to go into the Dollar Store/Dollarama or any major retail store and refuse to buy goods made in China. I can refuse to eat at a Chinese reastaurant but probably the owner is a Canadian citizen or at least a permanent resident of Canada. China is not on my bucket list of countries to visit.
