Default Chemical attack in the UK

Is it only me that is curious how this happened to be so close to the Porton Down chemical research facility. There has been no mention in the news that it is 10 miles away, the nearest large town, to the UK's chemical weapon research facility.

This is the exact same observation that MrBEVS made last evening.

Curious perhaps but I can't see why it should be anything other than coincidental.

Coincidence indeed, unless of course they've got a sideline in producing rare Russian nerve agents...

We produce our own, as we know " British is best ".
Many years ago I had an acquaintance a micro biologist who worked there.

Of course we do, but I wasn't aware that Novichok was one of them.

We probably have a different name for something just as deadly.

On the politics prog that follows question time ex cabinet minister Portillo put forward the suggestion that the acts could so easily have been a reaction to the activities of western intelligence agencies in Russia.
What is different in this case is just how clumsy the act was, prioritising collateral damage is usually a priority in such acts by intelligence agencies.
Putin is ex kgb, an intelligence professional not an amateur and this act smacks of amateurism .
Russian mafia comes to mind.

Yes, agreed, very clumsy, not at all 'professional'.

But begs the question why this target? That one I haven't figured out yet.

The collateral damage was entirely deliberate. Two shots in the back of the head or ‘suicide’ by hanging could be easily written off. Using a nerve agent such as Novichok, which could only been supplied by the Russian state, so brazenly was to send a message to anyone thinking of crossing Putin that we will come for you and your family no matter where you are and there’s nothing anyone else can do about it.

There have been enough incidents across the world for that message to have got across long ago at least two in the UK.
At best it was incompetence, Putin is many things but not a fool.

Makes sense seeing the current reaction from the Russian officials. No "how awful, what can we do to assist?" but "instant denial and all rubbish" doesn't exactly look good. Ramping things up a bit?

Currently watching PMQ, Madam Medusa MkII has blamed the Russian state and is expelling 23 Russian diplomats, to be out within one week.

Many other measures, most of which I've missed but will catch up on later.

None of which will make any difference.
Putin will expell the same number or more British diplomats.
Now if we and all our so called allies withdrew from the world cup that would a bigger demonstration of disapproval.
But just as equally ineffective.
Next time the Russians will do a better job of covering their tracks.

Do they want to cover their tracks? Surely that would defeat the object?
