Britain acted as the ringleader in blocking attempts to regulate cheap Chinese steel entering Europe, despite warnings that the continent’s steel industry was in crisis, the European Steel Association (Eurofer) has said.
“The fact is that the UK has been blocking this. They are not the only member state, but they are certainly the ringleader in blocking the lifting of the lesser duty rule,” he told the BBC’s Today programme.“The ability to lift this was part of a proposal that the European commission launched in 2013, and the fact that the UK continues to block it means that when the government says it’s doing everything it can to save the steel industry in the UK and also in Europe, it’s not. It’s not true.”
Now that the UK's got the sovereignty back that they never lost, it's time to completely wipe the EU regulations slate clean.... After all, who needs the Working Time Directive that means employers can't force people to work more than 48hrs per week...

If the Government is serious about creating Singapore upon Thames they will have to scrap the WTD. The average Singapore worker puts in 46 hours per week.

If the UK wants to become a "low tax jurisdiction", they'll likely need to increasingly privatise the NHS. It's much too expensive to be funded through low tax alone.

If you’re contemplating a trade dispute with China then yes it did. Personally I think it would be pretty hard to change the Chinese economies direction now its a juggernaut that’s also investing heavily in projects around the world like Hinckley power station not to mention the other stuff

I think trade disputes with China are a given, with or without the G7.

I was referring to the diplomatic coolness toward a UK that features a well damaged reputation as a result of its behaviour since before The referendum. The G7 was supposed to demonstrate how post-brexit UK had truly become "global Britain". But that was for domestic consumption. The rest of the world isn't interested in how the UK spins it for domestic politics. They're interested in reliable partners.

The UK’s Brexit stance is doing serious damage to its relationship with the US

"Sir Nigel Sheinwald, a former UK ambassador to Washington, said: “The lesson of this week is that you can’t have a global Britain which is genuinely respected and influential and impactful around the world if people doubt your basic bona fides. There is no point in writing new Atlantic charters which depend on mutual trust, mutual confidence and the rule of law when you are operating as chancers.”

Somehow I imagine all the other G7 talking about him behind his back and wishing they could just work with the Queen instead.

I read that piece this morning and was amused by this - "their" referring to Macron, Merkel, von der Leyen and Michel:
Their annoyance is unlikely to have been lifted by the presence at all the meetings of Lord Frost, the UK’s chief Brexit negotiator, who was wearing union jack socks.
I can't help but wonder where those socks were made...

My son had union flag socks. When he was 8.

Light-hearted fun in some venues, but at an international summit?

I wonder if the Chinese factory got the flag the right way up? Maybe Frost is sending an international distress signal by wearing an upside-down flag?

I don't think there is any sweat in either of those towns, is there?

Maybe a little in Henley, during regatta week.

Perhaps if the local off licence is running short on champagne or certain fine wines or a shortage of caviar.
