Excellent point. The whole 'defund the police' issue is closely related to the BLM movement, and 'defund the police' is directly tied to police staffing levels. Every city I'm aware of that is experiencing these crime surges is clamoring for more police presence. One might cynically call it 'unintended consequences'.
The aim wasn't to cut Police numbers, it was to cut some non-Policing tasks from the Police and use the money to fund other, more appropriate services to deal with this. These non-policing tasks include mental health and welfare calls, which in the main, are better served by people with appropriate mental health training and experience than a Police officer trained to see everyone they deal with as a threat.
Look up Toronto MCIT, where a Police officer has a dedicated mental health nurse as their partner for these types of calls. That system works.

Not sure why you're trying to shut down this discussion, I think this is 100% relevant. At the heart of the debate around BLM is the role of law enforcement. The linkage between crime levels and law enforcement role is central to this discussion. To me, there is a clear linkage between rising levels of crime in the US and the ongoing debate about the role of law enforcement.
There is one on defunding the police - Defund The Police - and I would have thought this discussion would be more relevant there. That was all. That was why I asked what the cause was likely to be.
What are your thoughts? Is it a BLM issue? - or defund the police? COVID? WTF USA?

Not shut down discussion - but maybe move it to a more suited thread.

Don't be an idiot. It's one thing to slightly drift in to other areas when discussing a topic, but how far do we let threads go off topic before the original points were lost?

Often there are 2 or 3 or more threads a topic can be posted in, such is the nature of this forum. As long as it is somehow related.

Your suggestion seems to be that black lives matter raised questions of police reform, and calls to defund the police, which has created this lawlessness and that is why it should be discussed here? Have I got that correct?
