Jimenato desperately wants to call me that - with EMR gone others have to fill the void of shouting "wacist" every five minutes.

Did not know, was there an announcement?

I did wonder which Country would hold the investigation as it sounds like they were dead before they left Belgium.

The girl's text message was said to be sent while the container was crossing the Channel.

The lorry driver has been charged with manslaughter.

A lorry driver has been charged with the manslaughter of 39 people found dead inside a refrigerated trailer.

Maurice Robinson, 25, was arrested after the bodies of 31 men and eight women were found in Grays on Wednesday.

He is further charged with people trafficking, immigration and money laundering offences, Essex Police said.

Oh but some would be crying Police State if they had to carry an ID card.

Will never happen and even increasing the rate to 10% would have many in fits of outrage and why are they doing this etc etc.

Cue the high profile defence law firm who will probably take this case pro bono as it will mean lots of publicity.

Why 'in fits of outrage'?

The main reasons for the minimal number of checks at ports are down to sheer volume of goods passing through versus lack of personnel, time, space.

How long does a vehicle check take?
How many personnel are needed?
How much covered parking area does a single vehicle check need?

Doubling the number of checks likely requires a doubling of at least 2 of these, and increasing to 10% a massive increase. But the only ones likely to be complaning are transport companies and the end users of whatever is being transported.

But I'd expect an increase in customs checks after Brexit, so hopefully things like these deaths won't happen again.

Because a lot of companies rely on just in time inventory and stores do not want to build or rent more warehouses to store goods.
How long does it take to examine a truck well that depends on what you are looking for. Most major ports have either static or mobile x ray units to examine containers or trailers. If state of the art they can detect human beings inside within seconds to minutes. How many truck/trailers enter the UK each day. I am guessing thousands per day at several ports. If using a 5 minute start to finish to examine a container/trailer that is 12 per hour per x ray device. I highly doubt that any of the major ports have more than 10 static/mobile x ray machines. 120 vehicles per hour if you have 10. In a 24 hour period 2880 trucks a day. On average 10,000 trucks per day at Dover. So now you would need about 30 static/mobile x ray machines in operation per day just for Dover. Think the Govt will cough up the dough for that along with operators/staff etc.

Apparently UK pays the French to keep them.

Voila! Yet some Brexiters think it'll be easy to check every vehicle coming to the UK under a no-deal Brexit. I get the math, you get the math, but some don't.

Regarding these unfortunate deaths, a lack of checks emboldens people like smuggling gangs. While I have sympathy for the families of the victims, I'm not sure how sympathetic I am towards those who paid to be smuggled into the UK. And I definitely have no sympathy for the driver if, as it seems to appear, that he was part of the smuggling ring.
