First victim seems to be a Vietnamese girl who communicated with her parents by mobile phone in her last hours. The parents are said to have paid £30K to the traffickers. I suppose the risks are downplayed to the victims by the gangs.

“I’m sorry Mum. My journey abroad hasn’t succeeded. Mum, I love you so much! I’m dying because I can’t breathe ... I’m from Nghen, Can Loc, Ha Tinh, Vietnam ... I am sorry, Mum.”
This is as gut wrenching as the photograph of Alan Kurdi.

If the trailer had been loaded in Belguim, even that wouldn't have mattered.

Well the people inside the trailer didn't come from Belgium or anywhere else in Europe. Therefore more frontier checks may have picked them up en route to Zeebrugge.

And may not have.

Wherever they were before they were loaded into the trailer, I doubt they arrived in larger than groups of 1 or 2 to avoid suspicion.

It’s pretty unlikely that even without Schengen they would’ve been detected. The UK is not in Schengen but they weren’t picked up either leaving Belgium or arriving in the UK; the volume of goods traffic is simply too high to check more than a fraction of passes through. It would also be counterproductive given finite resources and the level of disruption it would cause. It’s far better to concentrate on intelligence led operations.

Well, how about more border checks within the UK. If open borders are the problem than start at home and close the borders between England, Scotland, Wales, and NI.

A big business, and inevitably there will be the occasional one that goes wrong.

Sounds like he went to check his cargo and no documents are not kept in a refrigerated container and found out that presumably the refrigeration unit had been tuned on.

Pointless trying to deflect this. It's a UK border failure.

"The chief inspector also criticised the lack of strategic management by Border Force of its relationships with the companies who own and run the ports, the BBC's Home Affairs Correspondent, Danny Shaw, reports."

Seems that way. I saw a port official say only 1% are x-rayed.

It's always going to be a problem when the mainland is awash with illegal migrants desperate to get to the land of milk and honey.

You'd think our "partners" would try and address the situation rather than letting them pile up in jungle camps awaiting their next attempt out of hell-hole Europe.

Why do you say they are illegal? Just because they are Chinese?
