Default 39 Vietnamese from Zeebrugge

A human tragedy.

Apparently Essex police have still not bothered to collect the GPS data from the truck.

Is the young NI guy a "murderer" as the press keeps implying he might be or simply driving the wrong truck at the wrong time?

Suppose it depends if the truck driver was directly involved in the smuggling.

Usually on this side of the world, the driver is very aware of their human cargo, so hard to feel sorry for the drivers.

Yes, I suppose so, though I thought it might be manslaughter rather than murder.

He’s been arrested but not charged. They’ve likely gone for murder so they can question him for longer. He might’ve been a fall guy; he might have known more than he’s letting on. Sounds like the police are making rapid progress though so we should know a lot more by the end of the weekend.

Ah, ok. I thought there might be some tactical reason for it.

It also makes you think how many people are being illegally smuggled into the UK on a regular basis.

Plenty more than are stopped but 20 miles of saltwater does make a huge difference when compared to elsewhere in Europe or the US. For the UK it’s the overstayers and identity fraudsters who are the biggest problem in terms of illegal migration.

Just think. There might have been far more opportunities to detect and prevent this sort of tragedy if a whole chunk of the EU hadn't stupidly withdrawn their frontier controls.

Initially I assumed he was just doing the local drayage from the port to door, but then it appears he has driven over from Ireland all the way to Essex which makes me wonder (unless the destination was meant to be Ire/NI).

Perhaps the smugglers recruited a young keen driver and got him to drive a great distance so that he would be less inclined to refuse the job when he found out it was human trafficking? Not sure how the bodies were discovered, all the news said was that an ambulance was called, but they haven't explained why and by whom.

All I can think is how horrendous the last hours would have been for the last one to die. A complete tragedy and the young driver, even if he knew what he was doing, is unlikely to ever get over this nightmare so yet another life ruined.

The driver claimed he pulled into an industrial estate in the early hours of the morning, about half an hour after setting off, to ‘check the paperwork’ which was supposed to be in the trailer, opened the rear door and found the bodies. He then called 999. It doesn’t seem like a very likely tale - surely you check the paperwork before you set off - but we’ll see.
