Default 1900 - 2021

Imagine being born in 1900.
When you are 14 years old
World War I begins
and ends when you are 18,
with 22 million dead.
Shortly after the world pandemic,
flu called ′′ Spanish ",
killing 50 million people.
You go out alive and free,
and you are 20 years old.
Then at the age of 29 you survive the global economic crisis that started with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange causing inflation, unemployment and hunger.
Nazis come to power at 33.
You are 39 when world war 2. begins
and it ends when you are 45 during the Holocaust (Shoah), 6 million Jews die.
There will be a total of more than 60 million dead.
When your 52th Korean war begins.
When you are 64, the Vietnam war begins and ends when you are 75.
A baby born in 1985 believes his grandparents have no idea how hard life is,
and survived several wars and disasters.
A boy born in 1995 and 25 today believes that the end of the world when his Amazon package takes more than three days to arrive or if he doesn't exceed 15 likes for his posted photo on Facebook or Instagram...
In 2020., many of us live in comfort, have access to various sources of entertainment at home and often have more than needed.
But people complain about everything.
They have electricity, phone, food, hot water and a roof over their heads.
None of this existed.
But humanity survived much more serious circumstances and never lost the joy of life.
Maybe it's time to be less selfish, stop whining and crying

Yeah, but …

All of those disasters affected some people adversely, but not others.

For instance, plenty of people made money in the 1929 crash, for instance by selling at the right time.

WWII led to tens of millions of deaths, and misery for tens of millions of others. But, many people (including British, American, French, Soviet, etc etc) had a “good war.”

Yeah, but...

"But people complain about everything.

For many, many people, they still do not have these things. They are starving, living in extreme poverty, suffering wars, and more.

I get the "pull your socks up message". Just too many people haven't got any socks. So maybe it's just the wealthy and comfortable that need to stop whining and help everyone else.

In the context of BE's membership, a brilliant post.

Oh, we most certainly live a higher standard than any of our predecessors. And so does much of the rest of the world. But we don't have that reference as an experience.

Most people only reference the worst and best times of their lives, which bears little resemblance to people's lives 100 years ago. Often, people remember their past with rose coloured glasses. As if it was all really great back in the 60's 70's 80's... But there were lots of problems then, just as now.

And generally speaking, most people have much more disposable income and far better lives than people did 100 years ago. In some areas of the world, its literally the difference of rags to riches.

But it's never enough.

which is very true, I think the vast majority of the BE membership does not fall into the category you describe, but we certainly see some serious whining of the type JG has referred to!

Well here's something I'm certainly not whining about.

Good news.

Yeah but.
I am constantly disappointed that so many people have such low expectations, I think we should all reach for the moon.
The boomer mantra of "You didn't live through the blitz, so shut up and be glad with what you got, butterccup" is sad, defeatist, lacking in ambition, and narcissistic.

"Baby boomers are the demographic cohort following the Silent Generation and preceding Generation X. The generation is generally defined as people born from 1946 to 1964, during the post–World War II baby boom."

So didn't live through the blitz!

Blitz or no blitz, one person's moaning is another person's "surely we can do better".

!
Though I think you are using an outdated definition, boomer is a state of mind. I fall in the date span for birth, I haven't taken any references to boomer as personally relating to myself in the last year or so. I know a few boomers in their twenties.

Obviously boomers are conscious of the war, having faced up to the aftermath, lived through austerity (in some cases), been involved with reconstruction, debt repayment, etc.

Yeah but...

This proves we really never learn from all of life's disasters and major catastrophes.
The world still has crackpots and dictators as leaders.
Until that stops happening nothing will really change.
