Default Zapatero and Spain's Budget Cuts

Cuts, Cuts, Cuts,
- Zapatero himself taking a 15% cut in salary... although their cabinet is to vote on the new proposals later this week.

See the allowance of 2500 for the birth of a baby has gone too. Pensioners pay frozen.

They look good and sensible to me, would have better if they had done this 2 years ago...

Let's see what the civil servents think of it, what are the odds on a "huelga general"? They'd be stupid to do so though.

Britain's turn next!

My OH is a funcionario so I expect he'll be seeing a drop in wages soon. He's still convinced that they will be making people redundant from his place of work - apparantly they had their budget cut by 150,000 euros this year and it's hard to see how they can claw that back without making redundancies.

So much for a 'job for life'.

The 15% is misleading as it relates to 15% of basic salary, which accounts for about third of full pay.
On the otherhand, the 5% relates to 5% of total pay.
In effect the cuts are very similar for both categories.

These cuts only apply to Government of Spain funcionarios (INSS, Trafico, National Police, GC, Army and any others; don't know if they are all included), so until the autonomous communities and town halls adopt a similar strategy, it won't have a huge impact. The State employs the least number of funcionarios.

What's needed are salary cuts, for firemen, nurses, doctors, teachers, local police, etc.

Reaction - my OH has expected it and is ok about it, no big deal. Some of his colleagues are outraged in a completely arrogant way. Some of them think they are really special !! and are acting as if its the end of the world.

I wonder how the Valencianos would feel if their FALLAS budget was cut to next to nowt.??

They Kicked up stink this year when their "ninots" (Statues) were limited to a "paltry" 100,000 euros each, in fact many were made on a theme as a protest against it.

a hundred grand ( times X by however many hundred ninots in each "cassell" their is are across the communititat valenciana), adding up to several million euros?

.......all to go up in flames.................

Do you think their budget should be cut back, and the money used in stead to, oh i dont know, build hospitals, give money to the elderly and out of work, feed the poor when their 3 months of dole money ends?.....

Or would cutting the fallas budget be akin to cancelling Christmas???

I understand the Fallas festival attracts millions of visitors to Valencia. I imagine it's like the Notting Hill festival - yes it probably costs a fortune, but it also brings in a lot of visitors and money.

Only one of those groups is paid from the public purse (i.e. taxes). How would you propose to curtail the pay of the others?

Shift them into a special 90% tax rate.
They can afford it.

With bankers from banks bailed out by the Government I would only allow bonuses to be in the form of shares.

These shares would have to be purchased from the Government at the original bail out price + 10%pa or the current market price whichever is the greatest and would be required to be owned for 5 years before selling.

Hints today by the president of some union of a general strike in Spain.

Any opinions?

Not sounding good.
