would you have moved

Hi, a question to all the people who use this site and live in Spain or own property here. Would you have moved or bought property here if you had listened to the advice given on this site, com on now be honest. I am not talking about the present crisis of the last twelve months

It's the same with anything - you do your own research. The people here can only throw light on specific circumstances that they have experienced, which may or may not impact on your decision.

I just wanted a bolt hole, a light airy apartment in a busy town with access to a decent pool and parking. That's what I wanted, that's what I bought. The Spanish are a noisy race and apartment living is communal - it's not for everyone. I love it but I am not there permanently, still unsure if I would enjoy it on a full time basis.

Had someone said to me about the noise - mopeds, dogs, fireworks, loud conversations throughout the night - that might well have made me think twice. Fortunately they didn't as none of it bothers me. I thrive in the environment.

Hindsight is always in 20:20 vision.

God, if only I could have known then what I know now. I would have sold up sooner, and moved out long ago.

If I could, I would still have picked the same place.

I had never heard of BE when I moved out here so it was unable to cloud my judgement in any way. If I had, maybe it would have put me off buying....I don't know. I'm not sure how seriously I would have taken the information/misinformation which seems to be present in about equal amounts.

I am very happy here and moving to Spain is definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I never used forums for research, i don`t need to explain why.:(

I`ve travelled a lot and worked in most of the countries I`ve been too.

Spain was another job challenge, i would/could have stayed, but the lifestyle wasn`t as great as I`d hoped for.

People in Spain are fine, no different in there treatment of immigrants than most other countries on there level, such as Greece and Italy. Those three have issues not found in many more developed countries, such as Germany, Holland and the UK.

Work conditions/pay was an issue in leaving Spain, i dont appreciate being treated like expendable piece of sh...t.

Returning to the UK was due to a good job offer and a chance to live in the country my parents were from and I`m enjoying it, even though its in Wales.

It reminds me of the place i grew up in and I like the attitude towards education and opportunities for development that Spain doesn`t offer children, especially girls in the region we lived, it was very undeveloped area of Spain.

I suppose anybody who needs/decides there discission on the grounds of comments made by strangers on a forum really should not move.

You need to have an inner belief that what your doin is right, no matter what advice strangers give you, but you should also not ignore peoples experience completely.

Please enlighten us about 50% misinformation ?

I moved to Spain before forums were invented, but read a few books beforehand and even went to night school to learn the language. After some experimenting, I found the courage to make the big move. I literally picked a place at random from Dalton's Weekly, and got on the aeroplane.

It was a frightening time at first, with many disasters, and I still remember forgetting my pin number at a time of stress and suddenly finding myself in a foreign country without money. Or being treated for tennis elbow at a health clinic where no one spoke English.

Or, perhaps worst of all, a sudden hospital admission for a minor operation, when I just managed to persuade the harassed surgeon in time that the Spanish woman waiting outside was having her leg amputated, and that my troubles were much less, and didn't involve him using a saw.

I booked in for Spanish lessons the very next day.

There are people who post on forums who try to pass their opinions off as facts, or pretend that they have knowledge about certain subjects when they really know nothing and consequently misguide others.

It is very difficult for a newcomer to distinguish between the two and they could end up making important decisions based on total rubbish.

Forums are a great place to go if you want advice. They are equally as good at misleading. I am glad that I did not look at any forums before buying in Spain because they may well have influenced some of the decisions I made at the time, and that would have been a mistake.....if I could turn the clock back there is nothing that I would do differently.

I has been reading this forum years before I actually started to post on here. I think anyone would have to be insane to move here solely on the basis of reading the forum alone. At the end of the day this site is based on certain facts, opinions and experiences of others and only you can determine for yourself whether this suits you.

I have to say half the fun was exploring and learning for myself.

I read advice, but i could never live by others, my father and I always fought about it.:(

I like making my choices and mistakes.

So if you think there is 50% rubbish on this forum then why don`t you say so at the time, that is what a discussion forum is about ?
I think you are a little over the top and belittling the people that post valuable info on here, if you think the info is wrong then say so and prove your point.
I know people have different views about life in Spain and it varies from area to area, but people do not post on here to mislead others like you seem to think.

This is getting off topic. Please lets return to the original subject immediately and not get into a discussion about this as its clear everyone has their own opinions and experiences. Not everyone is always right for sure but in this place generally the correct info comes out overall.

Thanks for your cooperation

Re: would you have moved

I think that forums can be extremely useful, and it's easy enough to filter out information that is not helpful.

As an example, most Spanish expat forums will at some stage discuss the biggest holiday resort in the world, Benidorm. I've read a myriad of different opinions about the place and know it rather well myself.

That it's noisy and full of British holidaymakers is immediately apparent, but digging a bit deeper, there is some excellent advice on The Square and its problems for teenagers, there's serious mountain walking available within a hundred yards of Rincoln de Loix; the Old Town is famous for its Gay entertainment scene, and if you've read about Sticky Vicky on the forums, you may wish to give her act a miss.

And what about the many threads dealing with corrupt construction companies? Surely such information is extremely helpful to any British people contemplating buying a home in Spain.

And even for those of us who've been here for a few years, the forums helped me to renew my passport last year, the forums have saved me from hours of unnecessary queueing, and, quite recently, helped me to find an honest and efficient electrician, and he was English.
