Was it worth it ?

The Olympic legacy...

Time enough has now passed and the somewhat ethereal and hypnotic hold the Olympics held over those who believed in the already broken dream has dissipated, what long term legacy has been settled upon the nation?
A self indulgent plethora of even more z-list celebrities vying for positions in dumbed down tv dross. Those unable to scam a niche in the ‘ Luvvie’ world confined to filming as many adverts as they can before their names disappear from the publics memories.

The continual closure of Olympic venues, the costs thereof added to the ever increasing debt level drowning the country. One of the largest and most expensive venues is handed over, for a nominal stipend, to a premiership football club embroiled in financial shenanigans....With all costs of refurbishment ( To a less than year old stadium) also added to the public purse.

The producer/director of the whole opening shebang declining a royal honour and distancing himself from the ‘Legacy’ fallacy.

9 billion quid....There ya go......Worth it or not?

Whatever the answer, it doesn't stop countries queuing up to try and host it, so there must be some benefits. Even if it's only for the people putting it on! Spain is pushing hard for the 2020 Games, and seemingly it's looking good apart from the money side of things. They reckon Spain has most of the infrastructure already in place, so could put on a show on the cheap for a mere billion or so!

Worth it, not sure but it sure was good while it lasted. What else would they do with the billions anyway...er. give all those fat single parents a rise, pay for more lethal weapons for Libya, Syria and god knows what countries

I suspect you know who will be along to remind you of Gareth Thomas! ;)

Obviously I mean "queer" in the old fashioned context... as in... odd, strange, not quite right.... As for Thomas, loved the man as a player, makes a pretty good pundit too. (Oh and I agree... we ALL know who will be along soon...)

"Rugby is a good occasion for keeping thirty bullies far from the centre of the City"
.....Oscar Wilde. ;)

On the other hand, you might appreciate this one better....

"We've lost 7 of our last 8 matches, only team we beat was Western Samoa.
Good job we didn't play the whole of Samoa".
.....Gareth Davies.

If the money stayed in the country and gave work to local people and businesses then yes, it was worth it (quite apart from the sport and the opening and closing ceremonies, which were brilliant).

I think it's a bit much that the taxpayer should fund the cost of converting the stadium for West Ham though, given how much they pay their players and how much they get from the TV companies. It should be a loan, not a gift.

"Was it worth it"
I doubt if we'll ever know for sure.
It certainly did Barcelona the World of good and many would say that some long term effects are still being felt even now.
I think it's definitely improved the profile of London itself, but wether it's of any benefit to the rest of the country is debatable.
