It’s official: this European capital is the world’s most tree-friendly city

Try and visit the Retiro next time you go to Madrid, a wonderful experience.

We go most years, and really like Madrid. Now that traffic has been rerouted underground the road alongside the Royal Palace is lovely to stroll along too. As well as the Retiro, the Madrid Rio is nice to walk through, although a fair distance from the centre. Last time we were there there were even hammocks strung between trees for people to use.

And anyone who loves cheese shouldn't miss this wonderful shop in the Chamberi area.

We visited Madrid recently and really liked it. In fact everyone in our family preferred it to Barcelona, though the latter seemingly does enjoy a better climate

Overall it was very green, a great city for walking, but also well-connected with a metro network that is a breeze to use. Cannot really fault it, though it would be good to get a list of everyone's favourite hang-out spots, especially restaurants and places to pop in for a drink.

I think it would be fairer to say ‘a’ tree city rather than ‘ the’ tree city although it is an excellent achievement. Just to put
some context, 21 U.K. cities also received the title and 5 London Councils were recognised as Tree Cities of the World! The councils are:
  • London Borough of Barking & Dagenham
  • London Borough of Camden
  • London Borough of Ealing
  • London Borough of Redbridge
  • London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Was that award given before or after they cut down trees for Line 11?
