I was wondering if anyone had any info on the best way to start a market stall in the Alicante Region?.

Are you already in Spain ? if not can you prove you can support yourself ? and private health care, recent new rules for residency (July 2012 I think)

Being self employed you will have to be autonomo therefore pay approx. 250euros a month for that plus have a permit/traders licence I would think and pay for the pitch if you can get one. First stop would be the Ayuntamiento for details permission needed and of costs if you fill the criteria for residency here. There will be lots of bits of paper required if you are new here and taxes to pay on most of them :)

Its 50€ a month unless I have it wrong from Oct 1st.

In most of the Spanish markets I've been to, there were almost no non Spanish stall, in fact there were lots of British people saying there were being denied stalls, despite there being plenty of space, it was always something to do with the town hall protecting it's own. In fact the local town hall where I lived went out of it's way to close down all the boot sales, and refusing licences to run them. You would certainly need a lot of luck getting a stall, and would, I suspect, have to have some really attractive stock that no other stall on the market had.

As long as he brings a good supply of brown envelopes I'm sure just about anything is possible. ;)

Many non Spanish stalls in Costa Blanca. In some markets Spanish nationals are in the minority!

I think it all depends on the attitude of local authorities in different areas.
If they don't want guiris running stalls and businesses they know well enough how to make their lives difficult enough to get rid of them.

I would guess that at least 90% of market stalls around my local villages were run by North Africans when I first moved into the area.

I later noticed a period when there was a lot of hassle with constant arguments between stallholders and the local police who seemed to be giving them a hard time.

Now I don't readily recognise a single stallholder as being Arab or N.African or even British for that matter and the police presence and activity is virtually zero.

I don't think it needs Sherlock to work out what's happened.

as you will be "trading" it is normal, as others say above, for you to register as "autonomo".
however, you will find that the Spanish tax system has special allowances for certain types of worker and if you plough through

you will find there is a reduction for those who are market traders.

you will at some point need to take legal advice on this as Spain requires registration from the first day of trading, even if it is just the buying the stock - unlike the UK where they give you plenty of leeway on these matters
