That sounds like a very sensible plan, Wilf. I hope it works out well for you and your wife and life in Spain will be everything you hope it will be.

Sorry to hear about the flooding, it has looked very bad for some areas on the news. We had some of it ourselves recently in Andalucia and other areas, the damage it can do is just unbelievable.

I find some things more expensive and others cheaper.

I would suggest, overall there is not much in it either way.

Try a week in the Canary Isles.. thing are cheap here if you shop were the spanish shop.. One bedroom apartment around €500 a month all in..and all year sunshine..

thanks for all advice. we have acted pretty quick and are coming over to spain , flight to alicante on 30th of jan 2013 and hiring a car. got some rental properties to see. However, guys, do we need an international driving permit and a credit card to hire a car as we are confused about conditions of hire, or can we just take our uk licences and debit cards or cash. thanks.

UK license is fine, you should be able to use debit card, cash is usually accepted as well, but I would look at what the companies need as a card on line, some may only accept credit cards. UK license MUST be a photo one, and I would have the paper part with you as well.

Haven't got a photo license and never had a problem hiring a car. It's a few months since we have been, but that was still the case then. They ask for passport, but that's all.
Edit. Just looked at the T&C's for a few companies, I can't see one that mentions photos. From one of the companies,
I only have a paper driving licence (UK). Is this okay?
Yes, provided that you also show your passport for photo ID.

Yes, provided that you also show your passport for photo ID.
The police might not see it that way though, AFAIK you need a photo driving license to drive in Spain, most police would not recognise the paper one if they saw it as it is all in English, the photo one is an EU design, so all the bits like the type of vehicle you are allowed to drive are the same throughout the EU. The rental company isn't interested whether your license is legal in Spain, just that you have one. It's down to you to make sure you are driving with a license that conforms to the requirements of the country you are in.

Possible, though having been stopped with a non photo license before I never had a problem. You said you have to have a photo licence to hire a car, that is not true. I'm simply stating the fact in case the OP doesn't have a photo type, he doesn't have to panic to try and get one before January.

Very few hire companies will accept cash and will require a security deposit. I always use my UK credit card and find it cheaper than using my UK debit card. Check the fees applicable to your credit and debit card.

Bear in mind that it can be very cold here in Spain in January and bring warm clothing.

Wilf, just to throw in as a comparison for you, I have electric central heating and air conditioning, the heating side I find too expensive to run so heat with portable gas fires. My gas bill for 12 months works out to €10.16 per week which also includes cooking by gas hob and a gas water heater. If my memory serves me right I was paying £60 per month for gas when we left the UK in 2002

No to aircon and yes to pool pump. But the latter is only on for a couple of hours a day at this time of year.

No to aircon for heating, no to pool pump (no pool) but still €79 per month and thats on dual tarriff !!
