Those good points are very valid about England - when get struck down seriously ill somewhere overseas you then appreciate our NHS and not getting a huge medical bill at the end of it.
Anyway I thought healthcare was pretty much free in Spain? First thing that struck me when I read this list is that most of it could be talking about Spain: Friends and family Worlds best democracy Freedom of speech History Wealthy country with low poverty access to free health care system Excellent emergency services Good facilities Amazing cultural heritage Sense of humor only fellow brits understand But does "worlds best democracy" and "wealthy country" really describe modern Britain? |

I like Spain....but that doesn't mean I'm going only notice the good bits in Spain and only the bad bits in the UK. Both countries are exactly as you said...a compromise, and there are certainly bits I like better in the UK and vice-versa. NB - not everybody can afford a new car. :frown: |

Obviously there were Celts in Spain, some names like Segovia (Segobriga) still carry a typical Celtic name for towns ("briga") after 2500 years, but this is a complicated issue and Spain a land of many different tribes. Some Spanish people tend to exaggerate the Celtic influence. It might sound cool to them. The blood connection between the British population and Spain doesn´t seem to be Celtic - there are also big doubts about how much Celtic are the British. Of course Gaelic is a Celtic language and the English speak a Germanic language. But it seems like all those invasions brought culture and language but it did not replace the basic genetic makeup of the British tribes. But now take a look at these maps and tell me: ¿Where did the Basque go? I am sure you´ll find the answer fascinating. http://www.relativegenetics.com/geno...b_large_RG.jpg This map refers to a specific genetic marker included in the Y chromosome. This marker happens to be the most common in Western Europe. I had hoped Galicia would appear similar to the UK & Basque Country because of the alleged connections between Galicia & the people who would be known in Britain & Ireland as Gaels? I find this whole subject extremely fascinating. |

Are you suggesting that black patch across the Pyrenees relates to the basques? It touches on part of euskadi, mainly the northern part of Navarre, but most of the basque country appears blue. |

I think Spain is far more bureaucratic than the UK. I'm not grumbling (all that much), but I don't like it when people think everything is wonderful about Spain and everything is awful about the UK. Botth countries are a mixture of good and not-so-good. Anyone who pretends otherwise is kidding themselves. |
