I think the standards in UK have gone down alot across the board. Shame because I think it used to be a great country and it has been ruined.

Funnily enough the there is quite a large Spanish expat community in my area and some of those members say similar things about their own country! Each to their own, I say:) |
Re: why stay in england
main reasons for spain are the beautiful women, tapas, ability to find a shop open after 5:30, non phlegmatic people, relaxed attitude to life, colourful Easter festivals, bright sunshine and climate and excellent high speed trains.
I´m not convinced that Spain is such a good deal for lack of political correctness( there´s an awful lot of that here too now especially with the current socialist government) and local people at least are struggling to get onto the housing ladder which partly explains why most Spaniards live with their parents until their 30´s. Reasons to leave England: pay and display(this is a pet hate of mine), phlegmatic people(as Michael Palin once said" there´s noone harder to impress than the English"). extremely expensive public transport, a tendency to deride anything traditional in order to pander to multi-culturalism, the awful nightclubs and nightlife. Reasons to stay in England: my family, the countryside, Marmite, scones, gravy, chocolate Easter eggs( oh dear, pretty pathetic, isn´t it? |

Why are they the only two options? |
Re: why stay in england
Dazzle, there are only two options for some people,as we have heard from other people,if you go to Spain and sell up in England and dont like it ,its difficult to get back on to the housing ladder, you chose to do it your way and it works for you, they will have to find out what will work for them:

Is it really impossible to believe that anyone can be happy living in the UK? |

There does seem to be something of an assumption on this board that if you haven't left the UK already, you must be either planning to, or "are too scared to contemplate it"
Why are they the only two options? If I had the absolute choice I would live here in Spain for part of the year, and live back in the Uk for the rest, but mostly in Spain. Just financial freedom really as I checked out renting our place in the UK and it just didn't stack up. |

If the choice is to keep 2 homes on the go , Obviously 1 would be in Spain :) But no way would a Uk 1 be kept , a second one in Florida maybe if you had lots of surplus cash to use or invest .. But then again if Spain gets to you ! and you want a break , when that occurs ,with all that dosh you are saving ,you just say hmmm lets have a month in Iceland or heck lets zip over to Blighty have a laugh at all the problems they got then fly from there to hmmmmmmmmmm i know lets zip over to Turkey get the latest Copy clothing etc.. The worlds your oyster so why saddle with 2 homes ? and be forced to go back to the same area every time  This is possible from 2 ways . (1) the interest on the money you have sitting on deposit , thats not tied up. or (2) The money your not spending on that mortgage . Or in the perfect set up both ;) :) |
