Who is moving on and why?
Just wondering (as we're still stuck trying to sell our house in the UK :mad) if you are moving back to the UK (or maybe another country altogether) what are the main reasons? I gather people on fixed income (i.e. pensions) are struggling with the exchange rate, and obviously unemployment is gathering pace in Spain too. But I was wondering more about any day-to-day things that affected people's lives and made it difficult to settle. This is not designed to put people off moving out there (least of all us :p) but just curious ;)

Re: Who is moving on and why?
We are moving back to the UK for two reasons. The first being our business, which has become too busy for us to run from here ( at the moment one of us goes back for a few days each fortnight - and dont want to carry on doing this forever ), and yes we are grateful that we are so busy during this recession ! . The second reason is that we miss our family too much, and even seeing them when they visit or when we are in uk is just not the same as having them around the corner.
It was not a decision we took lightly as we both love our villa and the area where we live, but life is short and there is nothing to say that we wont move back here in the future ! But as you we are here until we sell the house - whenever that may be ! |
Re: Who is moving on and why?
In 2010 we will be doing half and half UK/Spain.
Reasons? They are several Here's a few. I miss the city and being able to just go out of my front door and within twenty minute's walk be in the Art Gallery or Theatre for example. Here in this part of Spain, although it is lovely, all you can do without driving for miles is go to a bar or walk in the mountains. I'm not grumbling about this,it is wonderful, but I need a bit of stimulation sometimes. My husband misses playing in the band and going boating with his mates. We would also like to take up our EBay business again, it is not possible to make our product in this part of Spain, nor would it appeal to the Spanish market. I would also like to get some temporary work. We would also like to see a bit more of the UK and also flights to Europe are cheaper from the UK. However, we love our little village house and the village, so we intend to spend Winter and Spring here in Spain and Summer and Autumn in the UK. That's the plan anyway. We still have a house in the UK so are better off than some. |
Re: Who is moving on and why?
we are going back for health reasons (not because I think I will get better care or treatment in UK, the doctors here have been very good and I can not fault the treatment I have received, I just want/need my family close) but around 99% of the people we have known who have already gone back have gone because of work reasons, its very hard to get regular work here and when you do get work the income can be a lot lower than you might hope/think
its not as easy as people think and even if you come with a trade there is a LOT of competition only today I spoke to a satellite guy I know, been here 8 years and he said the work side is just dead so he is leaving |
Re: Who is moving on and why?
We are going back to the UK just before Xmas due to the work thing we have regular work but we dont earn enough to keep our heads above water.
So we have started packing and it also looks like we will be walking away from the house we so lovingly reformed and will be handing the keys into the bank, It is heartbreaking as our life savings were invested in it and we cant sell it, we have to go back and rent for the time being until we can hopefulkly get back on our feet and hopefully buy again while the UK housing market is low, anyway get the violins out |

Re: Who is moving on and why?
Well our house is worth more than the mortgage we got off the bank as we have renovated it and it is for sale at the cheaper end of the market but it is still their property and if we cant pay the mortgage we have to give it back to them and they will sell it for just enough to get their money back if they can I know a few people in Spain that have just been in and handed the keys over.

Sorry to hear that. Can you do that then? Hand the keys back to the bank? I would have thought it would be the last thing they would want in the current financial climate

If this appeals I can PM you with a site that offers an exchange service? |

What a fantastic idea jimmbo. Is this site just for houses or other things, like cars and boats?. I would appreciate it if you could PM me with the details, it would be an interesting read. And who knows what I might find.
