True.

Also, the half dozen or so PDT threads that got moved to TIO were already arguments in progress.

Personally, I will discuss almost anything. Sometimes - a very few times - an opinion is posted that I find so objectionable, and that I judge to reflect equally badly on the person who posted it, that I find it impossible to to be civil. But that's just like real life.

[QUOTE=stuboy;11311004]Perfect analogy, This is exactly what happened when we suddenly found ourselves in TIO. The humour. We don't get it. A lot of the humour that is used in TIO goes straight over my head.

I think one of Sally's one-liners was 'Wilmore' which means nothing to me. I was a bit annoyed because it was a thread I was enjoying. Perhaps you don't realise how much humour you use is actually American and not British[/QUOTE

Willmore.

It's like Hodor

Come on you lot, have a laugh, you know you want to.

And before it comes up, this is a Pulaski:

(Cunningly combined with the Wilmore after effect)

As Ray's Guide to Posting says, it all takes time to get used to the characters and shared history. None of us just sprang fully-formed from the head of Zeus.

(That's a classical allusion, not a BE poster or Game of Thrones character)

Why would that bother you? It was a comment that ok you didn't get but presumably the thread continued on the subject? I've been wandering in and out of TIO and The Lounge for 10 years, 'know' most of the posters and their style very well but still occasionally someone says something which makes no sense to me so I either ask or I scroll past and it either gets explained or doesn't get mentioned again, doesn't worry me or ruin my enjoyment of the thread.

It's also got nothing to do with US humour. It's a British site, with the majority of posters being British. Occasionally I'll post something in reply to someone else who's based in Aus and so it may be an Aus reference, others may not get it so they ask or ignore it. I post in The Trailer Park as well, actually, let's face it, I'll post anywhere if the subject interests me and I want to learn or if there's a jokey comment that I get or even if I have an Aus pov that may be of interest to the other posters. They either reply or they don't. It really doesn't matter.

Have you never gone to the pub and just got into a random conversation with strangers and enjoyed it? Made new mates but also met an idiot or two who you then decided to ignore but continue chatting to those you did like? BE is no different.

I could have said 'Vienna'. Then when it meant nothing to him, he would have got it.

I'd go and find a pic of Midge Ure in his prime and lust just a tiny bit. I'd probably also go to Youtube and play the album.

She goes well with most genres. She's not a fan of Trance though.

Re: Where Are They?

I personally regard TIO as more of a chat room and don't see anything wrong in that, I belong to several.

For some reason a war started between PDT and TIO and TIO won inflicting some heavy casualties on the former, who lost as many as half of their regular posters.

But there is another reason for the demise of PDT posters. The statistics are still being highlighted by concerned expats in Spain and show that 90.000 British expats permanently left Spain last year.

That's one in ten for the whole of Spain, the figures for the heavily populated expat regions are much higher. In the greater Torrevieja and Orihuela regions the actual number are 15,000 and 9,000 respectively, unbelievably high numbers, and more than half of the local expat population.

I live here and can vouch for the accuracy of the numbers. On my way down to the newsagents later, I will pass a shopping centre where six out of seven former British businesses are lying empty.

Apart from the newsagent, another five of the six businesses there have closed and the owners have returned to the UK. It's a scene of devastation, British expats are fleeing Spain in ever greater numbers.

I can confirm that that is also the situation in southern Spain. More still would leave if they could.

That's a real shame.
