Could I survive in Spain?
60 years old, teach English to adults, partial UK pension only, no property anywhere, maybe 20,000 quid to use to settle.
I just need to be not too far from a town where there is a demand for a few hours of teaching per week.
Suggestions please.

If you can get income of €800- 1000 a month and also cover your rental (from €350 a month upwards for a flat in for instance CB North) then you could probably have a reasonable lifestyle. £20k wont last you forever ;)

I always say "If you´ve got 1,000€ to live on, another 1,000€ to pay the rent and associated bills, and 100€ you don´t need to spend - then you´re in clover.

If teaching English is a "must" for your survival, then I would advise against your move. However, if it is to be a kind of hobby in which you could earn on the side just to enhance your existence, then go for it.

Your basic outlay will be around as follows:-
1. Rental of 2 bedroom apartment in a reasonably good location in a decent resort €550 per month.
2. Utilities:- €100 per month.
3. Food:- Use your own judgement
4. Car, petrol, transport:- Use your own judgement.
5. Allow a budget for trips to the UK.
6. Entertainment costs?

For your Residentia you will need to show monthly income and have private health insurance. Obviously, you will need a Spanish bank account also.

Mr Leper, I thought my NHS links would cover health coverage? Are some health issues excluded from the state coverage?

Where is CB north - a region in Spain? Or Barcelona? Or Bilbao area?

As an early retiree, you will not be entitled to state health care (for at least a year) and will therefore need private health cover.

Health care is available for retires ... thats simply put, people who are receiving a UK state pension. If you're not doing so then you will probably need to take out private health care until you reach retirement age. Private health care in Spain is relatively cheap. It's not clear from your post if you are an early retiree or not, hence confusing answers. Also the rental quoted by Leper will vary very much depending on where you choose to live. From these posts you will see it can be from €350 - €550 a month

I like doing a few hours work weekly, so do not plan to retire very much.

Aren't there small stone dilapidated house to buy, cheaply?
I only need a basic, slightly clean place.

He will not need to pay for private care for more than a year.The OP will be able to take advantage of the convenio especial, after one year, then it will cost him 60 euros a month, I think, and he will receive the Spanish NHS care , like any state pensioner.Not every region is doing it yet, but the list is growing, and soon all regions will offer this.

We're talking about some areas which can't actually afford to pay their farmacias .... I wonder how many free facilities they can provide in the future when they cant even afford to pay for the medicines that they are dispensing :lol:

I think most people here will tell you to be very careful when going down the route of buying "dilapidated stone houses". You may end up losing the money you put into it ;)

Is it feasible to buy a second hand caravan/mobile home and place it on land that you can either rent or buy cheaply?
A small field a few miles from a town might do. Utilities...
Water from a bowser could be purchased.
Solar and/or generator for electricity.
UK govt don't like this I believe - is this possible in Spain, as a permanent address?
Or do the super-rich just want to take all the land?

No ... it's not a case of the super rich taking the land.
If you want to build a house or site a caravan you will need planning permission. On rural land, thats not always so easy. I'm sure others will contribute, but many have found property purchase in Spain a little challenging, to say the least.

As I said, you want to rent a cheap place then head to the not so popular areas. As I mentioned before, you can get a flat in Oliva (CB North) for €350 a month and I am sure you will find some cheaper than that! Thats in the middle of the town

Property that is for sale dirt cheap ....... theres usually a reason for that. You would need to do your research very very thoroughly because if and when you came to sell it, you want to be able to do so.

Personally in this day and age in your position, I'd go for the cheap rental

but how is that reflected with someone who is not due to receive their OAP in the UK until 2020 ??
