Ive bumped this as I think its becoming more important every day and some of the blind may now accept the world economy is in dire straights,
So ideas for safest way to look after your savings? ,okay your gauranteed your money wont be lost by the UK banks if you spread it around but will it be worth anything in 2-3 years due to the "real" inflation rate?

Are premium bonds (ERNIE) still a safe bet? I know some people who have a regular income from investing a few thousand in premium bonds.

well the money is safe. BUT you will get no interest unless you win, and as I've had some since they first came out, and never won, they have lost a lot of value.

Has anyone noticed the advert that sometimes is at the bottom a thread? It is for Bradford and Bingley International!

We have lost a vast amount of money this year with our investments so we cashed them in (OK lost a couple of grand doing this but we were loosing £100 a day so better the devil you know) and put it into premium bonds we have won £50 a month since doing this. Not much compared to the % we were promised from our off shore investments but at least what we have left is safe and a little winnings on top for good measure. Maybe when the credit crunch is over we will look to something else with it.

Hi Mike you should cash your old bonds in and buy new ones, if your bonds have not won in 18 months then you should do it there's no restrictions on the amount of time you do this.

Friends here in Spain (there Brits) have won £50 pounds each month for the last two years, they have bonds in each name and one of them win every month. I bought some last month can't wait for the million

The safest bet is now to put all savings into irish banks as they have announced that they will guarantee all savings with no upper limit.
Oh and weve always done well out of premium bonds.

If you invested a £1000 with northern rock 12 months ago.today it would be worth today £4.95.
If you invested £1000 with HBOS a week ago it would now be worth £16.50.
If you invested £1000 with XL liesure it would be worth less than £5 today.

But if you bought a £1000 of tennants larger a year ago and drank it all. then took the cans back to the alloy recycling plant you would get £214.
so based on the above statistics.the best current investment advice is to drink heavly and recycle

This Monday, 20th, I think I shall consider investing 35,000 in the personal pension plan of poor, little Joe Shoemaker
